I cooked pasta, seeing as Tom liked Italian, Jay liked pasta and Nathan liked Spaghetti Bolognaise. For everyone, but Jay who was a veggie, I used a re-invented spicy meatball recipe that I knew always was a big hit with people. For Jay though I made a Feta bake with tomato and oregano in a separate dish that he could add to the pasta. All in all I was very busy in the kitchen, which I liked. The guys were all up on the top deck singing to the wakening dusk and Griffin was in the cabin reading a book. I could hear the warm hum of their voices from top deck and smiled to myself as I chopped up some tomatoes.

“Por la tarde, puedo oler la comida desde la cubierta superior (Afternoon, I can smell the food from top deck.),” said Captain making me jump from his sudden appearance.

“Sí, pensé que iba a tratar algo interesante que no sea marisco. Creo que los chicos son cada vez un poco harto de que para ser honesto (Yeah, I thought I'd try something interesting other than seafood. I think the guys are getting a tad sick of it to be honest),” I reply in fluent Spanish. He nodded and walked over to a pot that was simmering.

Although I shouldn’t, I stole a look to see his reaction. Captain wasn’t like most people I’d meet. He was reserved to himself and had a grey beard and fraying hair. He wore the same shorts and long sleeve navy blue shirt every day and had small black jandals that stayed on his feet. He had this dark piercing gaze that always made you feel insignificant and worthless, like you didn’t try hard enough, like you didn’t achieve well enough. He was grey, black and all shades in between.

“Tenemos que hablar,” he said.

“Talk about what?” I reply in English and watched him frown.

“Yu remember what I said didn’t you?” he continued, choosing to follow my switch of language.

“We’ve had many…” I say,

“About how close you get to these boys. You’re not legally allowed to go anywhere without my consent, I don’t want you thinking that you can go run off with them after this trip Monita. I don’t want you to abandon Griffin and I,” he said sternly giving me the piercing gaze. I growled and turned back to chopping.

“Captain what brought this up,” I say trying to be nice, but I remembered what I’d said and thought about when I was with Nathan today and it made me angry because I was meant to be angry at this one person, that one person being Captain. I felt bad for making Nathan feel it instead of him.

“I’ve seen the way you act around those boys, you act as if you are a teenager!” he said making it sound bad, “You seem to forget what your head is for and act out. I don’t want you to forget that the world is a cold place Monita, it does not matter how hot the sun burns you there is ice under each footstep. If you think you can go and runaway I can tell you now, you will not live long enough to run home crying like you did last time!” he said making my blood boil.

“I AM A TEENAGER!” I shout at him and throw the knife into the cutting board. I needed to free my hands of it. “Sometimes I want to act out and not think!” I continue. “No es para que usted pueda decidir a quién quiero amar! No es para que usted decida a dónde voy a ir en mi vida! Y ciertamente no es el adecuado para usted para que aparezca (It's not for you to decide who I want to love! It's not for you to decide where I'm going to go in my life! And it's certainly not right for you to bring up) what I did after mum died!” I shout.

He stayed silent for a long time and I could feel my chest rising and falling as I breathed heavily.

“I see,” he said and lifted his head. With that he walked out of the kitchen and towards his cabin. I watched until he paused and then said without looking, “I’m not sure if I want to see you again, tell Griffin that he shall deliver me my meals from now on. You are to speak to me only via him and I shall do you the same until I have felt it no longer necessary.” With that my dad walked away leaving me shaking and furious as well as broken.

“Dinner’s up,” I shout glumly and hear a racing of footsteps come down from top deck. Tom and Siva appeared first and both took a deep wiff of the aroma.

“Mmhh,” Siva said and grinned.

“Smells great!” Tom said enthusiastically and shook his head in a snap motion before clapping his hands. I forced a smile and handed them each a plate.

“Since Jay’s special, he’s got this dish here which is Feta bake with tomato and oregano. It’s a Greek dish,” I add as I pointed to it. “While you are all free to the Spaghetti and the spicy meatballs, I’ve also got some fresh bread here and a Greek salad if anyone feels like being anything other than saucy,” I say. They all nodded and dug in greedily before going to sit down at the table.

“God these are good!” Exclaimed Max grinning as he raced down another meatball on a fork full of pasta noodles. I nodded and thanked him before handing Griffin an extra plate,

“I heard it,” Griffin said as he took it carefully and patted my back gently. “I’m sorry,” he continued quieter. I took a small plate of Jay’s dish and some pasta before walking up the stairs to top deck where I could think without that roof over my head.

The sun was setting and it was gently getting darker as dusk became more prominent across the calm ocean. A red haze spawned from the top of the Island and its orange and red fingers reached out to grasp the sheet, bringing out a sprinkling of white stars in the distant horizon. Salty air was brought forward with a gentle wash of wind that made the ropes and pieces of the ship clink and jingle. I sighed and put my bowl of food down, not hungry at all before I felt a wash of hot tears come into my eyes. I did what I really didn’t want to do and whimpered before clutching my knees and bringing them to my chest.

~Nathan’s POV~

I didn’t really want to eat anything and the guys weren’t helping with their loud eating noises. I wanted to go see what Monita was doing up on the deck. She’s probably thinking or working…. Or both, I think as I pushed the pasta around with my fork. She probably doesn’t want to talk to me, I continue to think and sigh. Griffin sat down in front of me and began to eat his, looking occasionally up at me before back to his food.

“If you’re feeling sick, it’d be best to go up top…” he said after a long while and I blinked and frowned before I saw the flicker in his eye that went past. “Monita might be able to give you something,” he continued and I got his drift. I nodded,

“Thanks,” I say and he smiled before Tom picked up my plate and began to eat the untouched food. I would have normally laughed, but something didn’t feel quite right to laugh. It was sort of walking through a grave yard and hearing children laugh, something that wasn’t quite right and felt alienated.

I headed up the stairs and the first thing I saw was Monita clutching her knees and sobbing quietly at the bow of the ship with the darkness looming in the near distance. Maybe I should leave her be, I think unsure. She said today that she just wanted to be fine, that she didn’t want to tell me what was wrong so maybe I should just go downstairs and tell Griffin. He knew her better. But he sent you up. My mind fought back so I walked forward.
