Months later Joline jolted awake from a powerful dream. She had dreamed something frightening not of this world was chasing her, but she couldn't remember for sure what it had been. Rolling over to the left side of her bed, she grabbed the notebook and pen from underneath. She furiously wrote down what bits and pieces she could remember. She remembered running through a very muddy forest, she heard the sound of horses tromping through the thick mud. Joline heard men on horseback shouting to find the girl. When she wrote it all down it made her think. It was weird that she had this same dream for several nights over the past week. It was always freighting and intense.
The next morning when she got up Joline got dressed and left the house. She headed for the library. She wanted to find a couple of books on dreams. The nightmares had sparked a deep part of her curiosity and she needed to find out more. When she got there she looked through several rows of books before settling on three that seemed appealing. She checked them out and walked home with her treasures of knowledge. She began reading the second she got through her bedroom door. By the second chapter of the first book she began taking notes on dream interpretation and recall. Hours passed like minutes as she seemed to find a new world of dreams to explore. She read the entire first book as the mundane world passed by her. Joline stopped long enough to grab a coke from the fridge. By then she had filled half a notebook. She went back to her room to open the second book. It had dream symbol and their meanings. Now we're getting somewhere she thought. Joline wanted to absorb as much information as possible. She read longer and faster than usual until her muscles were stiff and she needed to stretch.
As she did peering through her second story bedroom window she saw something only for a second. It was a flash of a floating blue orb. She froze in place unsure as to what the thing could be.
Jameson hid behind a tree shaking his head toward the ground.
"What's wrong boss?" Jefferson asked his mentor.
"She sees us, but her gifts are improving at an alarming speed."
"What is that a bad thing?"
"Not yet, but if some of them have too much too fast, they turn."
Jefferson was completely lost and just stared at him mentor in confusion.
Joline stayed under the covers peeking out only to grab a flashlight and the notebook again. She wanted to write down what she had seen through the window. She had seen a lot of strange things in her lifetime but this made it to the list of her top five weirdest things. She wished she knew more about the blue orb by the tree. As she layed in bed that night she kept trying to think of other things but her mind kept running back to the strange blue light she saw. She wanted to know what it was. This thing had sparked her curiosity like never before. She began randomly getting up to check the window, wondering if it were just her imagination playing with her. Did she even see it at all? Joline was bound and determined to figure it out whatever it was. She thought about it for a moment before drifting off to sleep for the night.
Jefferson and Jameson were watching over Joline when Jameson looked at his apprentice and told him the news.
"I have been summoned by the ancestral spirits. I need to check on another mortal like Joline. I need you to stay and look after her on your own." He explained to Jefferson.
"Are you serious? What if something goes wrong while you're away?" Jefferson asked nervously.
"I will be back soon. Just follow the rules and you'll be fine until I return." Jameson told him with confidence.
"Hurry back sir and safe travels." Jefferson told his mentor.
Jameson smiled at him and then waved goodbye as he set off to check on another highly gifted mortal. Jefferson watched him go, unsure how to handle this without his mentor to advise him. He did his best to just watch, reminding himself not to interfere. He knew not to openly let his presence known to the girl. Even if he really wanted to. He just observed her and waited for Jameson to return.
Once Joline had drifted off into the world of the dream, she found herself inside an elaborate seventeenth century dungeon. She floated to the back wall of the elephant grey stone prision. She got a closer look at a girl in old rags chained to the floor. When the girl looked up with eyes of hopelessness, it was her own reflection. She didn't move and found it difficult to remember how to breathe. Then suddenly from behind her she heard footsteps coming to the dungeon. There was a tall dark haired gentleman with coal black eyes standing there wearing some kind of old ceremonial robe. He walked over to her imprisioned other self.
Her subconscious went into panic mode from the wicked feeling that had crept into her very soul. She could sense that whoever this guy was, he probably wouldn't think twice about ending her life. It scared the hell out of her. She jerked awake in a cold sweat gasping for air and forcing herself not to scream. She stopped took several deep breaths and looked around until her eyes met with her digital alarm clock that showed the time to be almost three in the morning. Joline leaned over and grabbed her notebook, she began to scribble the details of her horrific dream as it lingered in her thoughts. It took her another hour and a half to find sleep once more.
Over the next several days she researched as much information as possible on dreams and their meanings. She looked up different beliefs on dream analysis, omens and folklore. She had started to notice the dreams were more often and even more intense with each one.
