Jefferson sat in the tree not far from Joline's home and just watched over her. He had been waiting for her to get home from school. It got a little boring on those days. It annoyed him that he had to watch but not interfere with her life. He sat there and just looked at his mentor guide.
"What is it?" Jameson asked him, waiting for the questions to begin.
"What happened in there?"Jefferson demanded.
"What do you mean?" He asked, unsure as to what he was talking about.
"Why did she feel like she was being watched?" He asked him, then added "Who was it?"
"It's her ability."
"What is her ability?" He asked with a look of confusion.
"She can see things that most mortals can't or aren't supposed to." He explained.
"Please explain this to me." He begged Jameson.
"She can see in more than one reality. She can't see us, but she sees other things."
"What was it she saw?" Jefferson asked half nervous as to the answer he would recieve.
"The reason some of them feel like they are being watched is because they are but not by living humans."
"Who is watching her?"
"I'm not one hundred percent sure but it may be a ghost." He explained.
"You've lost me."
"Already?" Jameson asked slightly teasing.
"Some humans can see not their spirit guides, none of them see those, however a few humans sense ghosts, other spirits. She may have seen someone checking on her, a soul that has known her for more than a few lifetimes."
"Her soul mate?"
"Possibly, but not of the romantic notion as the mortals believe. It could be a friend she's had that isn't a spirit guide but someone that has known not her now but knew her soul for centuries, someone that may have known her this time but died young. Someone that just likes to make sure she's doing okay. They don't watch over her like we do. They just pop in and out to see that nothing is wrong, in a spiritual sense."
"Are you kidding me?" He asked.
"No I'm not kidding you. Sometimes people who were with them for several incarnations just make sure nothing is horribly wrong. They don't check in to see that little things are wrong in her current life. They just make sure that she's not harming her own soul."
"How do you harm your soul?" He asked the older guide.
"There are a few ways to do it, mostly by attempting to take their own life, things of a more serious nature than just being an outcast or a little different."
"Why are they checking on her now?" Jefferson questioned, worrying over the mortal.
"I'm not sure, it could be they've lost her before to something really bad."
"Like what?" He asked with alarm in his voice.
"Self inflicted evil. Black magic gone wrong, severe depression leading to horrific consequences." He informed his new student.
"It could just be someone who's got a soul that worries too much." He explained to Jefferson.
"Do they know about us keeping an eye on her?" He asked his mentor.
"That I'm not to sure of, but sometimes when a mortal knows too much it can cause a breakdown with a horrible result."
"Like a nervous breakdown or insanity?" He asked.
"Not mentally no."
"What other kind of breakdown is there?" Jefferson asked with the patience of a human child.
"Instead of a nervous breakdown or a mental one, it's kind of like a breakdown of the soul. Instead of being a lost soul, it's more like a misplaced or damaged soul."
"What in the hell?" Jefferson replied.
"No the underworld has nothing to do with it. That's a whole different mess of problems for the mortal world."
Jefferson just shook his head in response. He hopped out of the tree and floated down.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"I need to let this sink in, I'll return." He told the guide.
"Remember the rules young fellow."
"Yes, I know." He replied as he left to do some thinking on his own for a while. The entire conversation had him confused and a little dumbfounded. He really didn't know what to think at this point. He just needed to be off on his own for a little while.
