"Can she see us?" He asked.
"I think so, Jefferson."
"Can I talk to her?"
"You know the answer to that question."
The young apparition looked irritated by the truth.
"I want to talk to the girl, I need to help her." He whined to his mentor.
"Do you remember what happened to Mary Jo?" He asked in a stern tone of voice.
The memory of the girl came flooding back to him. He had tried to talk to her and the end result wasn't good. It had scared her so badly that the poor thing ended up in the Brookview asylum where she went through enough electroshock therapy that it stopped her heart.
"All right chief, I won't bother her. I get the message." Jefferson promised hanging his head low.
"Relax young fellow just remember we are here to observe her, not alter the girl's perception on life."
Jefferson nodded in agreement and then saluted him in a joking manner. The two spirits watched over young Joline. The girl was falling deeper and deeper into a dark depression. Jefferson felt sorry for her. It really bothered him to see her like this. He knew he could not interefere with her life. He thought for a moment then looked at his mentor.
"Can i influence her dreams?"
He responded with a wicked glare, remnisent of the infamous evil eye.A look of general impatience and annoyance from his mentor.
"Why are you so intent on messing with this one?" Jameson asked the young one.
"I knew her when I was alive, it was in her last life before this one."
"How did you know her?"
"She was my sister. It was my job to protect her the night she died."
Jameson simply gave the young apparition a look of understanding. Then after thinking a moment he spoke.
"The rule is in place for good reason, even if you don't agree with it."
"Yes I know that sir." He replied in an almost child like voice.
"Good then we can drop the subject."
The two spirits went back to watching over Joline. The saw her the adolescent girl climbing into bed for the night, crying until she fell into a deep sleep. It had been a result of mental exhaustion.
Two nights later Joline sensed another strange vibe. She didn't know what it was and feared telling anyone about it. If she told mom it wouldn't be a heart to heart talk, more of an interrogation. She'd be asked if she were on dope or pregnant or both. Joline knew she sensed something not of this world, but unsure as to what that something was. Whatever it was it didn't give her a sense of fear or panic. She knew in her heart it would not cause her harm. Joline wasn't sure how she knew it, but she didn't sense anything dangerous by it.As she contemplated what it could possibly be. Jefferson just shook his head in frustration.
"She has to find out on her own boy." Jameson told him.
"She's so lost and confused, can't I help her?"
"No, there is such a thing as too much help. You must let her learn, not do it for her."
"I know sir but I just hate to see her suffer."
"She will be fine trust me." Jameson assured him.
"Yes,sir."
"Good, now it is a journey she must travel on her own."
"Yes I remember we are not to alter their life path." Jefferson recited.
"So you do actually listen to me,heh?" Jameson teased with a sly grin.
Jefferson simply rolled his eyes in response.
"What is she supposed to learn?" Jefferson asked.
"That is for her to know not you." Jameson replied in a sharp tone.
Jefferson tried not to appear offended by it as he turned to watch over the girl. She was very confused, not with her life or how to live it but more of a confusion of the soul. She needed to understand why she could see and sense things that didn't exist in this realm. She didn't know anyone else with similar experinces which didn't help her to understand it.
She had been able to see and hear things her entire life. She had a nice group of friends but she didn't think they would believe her, not about this. She covered her face with her hands and fought the urge to cry and scream. Frustrated with all of it she turned to her happy place, a book. She loved to read anything and everything. It helped her escape for a while, being lost in a paranormal romance or fantasy novel.
After reading through several chapters she took a break. She dashed down the stairs to the kitchen, opened the fridge and grabbed a coke to take with her. She ran back up the stairs. She sat down on the edge of the bed. She looked over and saw something in the corner near her oak dresser. She went over to investigate but there was nothing there. She shook her head.
"You're not psyhic your psycho." Joline told herself in her empty upstairs bedroom. She went back to her book, in hopes of avoiding her inner thoughts for most of her evening.
"I think she saw me." Jefferson commented.
"Probably she did."
"How is that possible?" He asked his mentor in bewilderment.
"Some of them have the gift to see us, and some of them don't. She has the ability to see beyond the physical world, but she doesn't know it yet." Jameson told him.
"When will she know?"
"That is entirely up to her."
"I still wish I could help."
"I know but you must resist the urge. Each lesson is like a stumbling block."
"Whatever you say sir." Jefferson replied.
