|Chicken and Night Skies|
« EDITED »To say the least, Jackson and Mark had both been bombarded with end-of-year assignments all week. Some were either due the following week or the week after so, on that Friday, they found themselves on an abandoned building's roof enjoying a large box of chicken. Both were quiet as they ate and sat in the depths of their heads, planning out the research papers, essays and worrying about unfinished group projects. Or, in Mark's case, only thinking about how delicious the chicken was when he got tired of worrying over the endless checklists and success criteria sheets he'd practically memorized at that point.
The blonde didn't realize he was paying so much attention to the pieces of crispy heaven in the box until he heard a gasp and then shuffling beside him. "My friend, Youngjae, dragged me to a pet store 'cause he wants to buy a bird. Which one do you like?"
Jackson showed Mark three pictures on his phone, pointing to the third one when he swiped to it. "What colour is it? My friends spent days in our group chat debating what the colour was but they never figured it out." Mark took his time in examining the picture.
"Indigo."
"Indigo?" Jackson asked slowly. "So, purple?" Mark shook his head.
"Indigo isn't purple."
"Blue?"
"Nope." The older male turned to Jackson – who wore a look of confusion and light frustration with a barely visible – and, in Mark's opinion, cute – pout. "It's both, I guess." Attentive eyes stared at the twenty-four year old. "Indigo is like the blurred lines between blue and purple. Sometimes it's near to a dark purple and other times it's near to a dark or navy blue. Indigo is like forgetting who you're stuck as and just saying 'fuck it, imma just be which ever of the two I want to be today'," Mark explained enthusiastically, hoping the other male's confusion and pout would vanish in the warm breeze of the summer night. He focused on the plain sky above them right after as a way to stop himself from checking Jackson's reaction to his words.
The sky was an almost dark blue, with a faint mix of orange and pink flowing at the tops of the tall buildings, masked the stars Mark do desperately strained to see.
"Do you miss California?" It was said so softly Mark barely caught it. Jackson seemed hesitant and almost scared to ask. It surprised Mark and when he glanced at the younger male beside him, his legs were pulled to his chest in a way that made him look smaller and even vulnerable. The blonde hummed, a bit worried.
"I miss the skies in the parts that weren't overflowing with buildings and Youtubers." Mark stated. "Do you miss Hong Kong?" Jackson went dead silent for awhile and Mark ignored it, too preoccupied with finishing their box of chicken and the light-polluted sky that hung idly above the pair and thousands of other people. "I liked the turquoise one," Mark finally announced when Jackson threw the last bone into the box, referring to the second picture Jackson had showed him of a small bird with a white head and torquiose body. Jackson chuckled light and Mark wasn't worried anymore. The brunette hopped to his feet gracefully with a smile Mark had grown to... like.
"Everyone does," Jackson informed, pulling Mark to another destination and adventure. The older of the two let him, both running through the streets of Seoul until hours after sunrise.
