Chapter 16: We're one step closer

A few weeks had passed since the Vermilion Gym Battle and we, in case you forgot, me, Eevee, Vulpix and Leaf, had done a lot. I'd managed to get the Rainbow and Soul Badge over the last 3 weeks, Eevee had gotten stronger, Vulpix too, I also caught a new Pokemon, a Graveler. Leaf, having already beaten the Indigo League, obviously didn't challenge the gyms, but she was always cheering us on. Our next stop was Saffron City and on to the 6th Gym Badge, the Marsh Badge.

"Well, Cody I can't say I expected you to be so close to the Indigo League already." Leaf said. I looked towards her as we were walking out of Fuschia. "You doubted me?" I asked jokingly. She rolled her eyes "Of course not. It's still a surprise though I must say." I looked up to the sky and sighed. "Yeah I get what you mean. I'm surprised too. I can't really believe that it's already this close. It feels like yesterday since I got Eevee." Eevee trotted along beside us quietly. "I can't believe any of this. Meeting all the people I have." I stopped abruptly. "Hmm? What is it Cody?" Leaf said, also stopping. Eevee stopped out of curiosity. I turned to face Leaf. "Hey... y'know, the best thing on this entire journey so far was meeting you again." I said. Leaf blushed a little. "C-cody" I walked over to her and held her hands. "Seriously, thank you Leaf." I said, I moved in to kiss her when all of a sudden I heard a familiar voice. "So. You got a few badges, new Pokemon AND a girl I see Cody?" The voice said. I turned swiftly to see Matt. "Hello lovebirds" he jeered. "HEY! Who the hell are you anyway?" Leaf said. I grabbed her arm. "This is... Matt. He's my neighbour and I s'pose we're rivals aren't we?." I said. "Yes we are. And to keep that going." he grabbed a Poké-ball. "I challenge you, three on three, let's go." he said. "Fine, I accept, and we aren't gonna lose!" I said, determined to win. 

The air was still and area was quiet. Both Matt and I stared each other down. Leaf, being the only one there, took it upon herself to be the referee. "The battle between Cody and Matt will be a 3 on 3 match. No switching allowed, and each player may bring only 3 Pokemon each. Ready, battle, begin!" Matt wasted no time and sent his Pokemon out right away. "Go! Scyther!" a mantis Pokemon, that was very powerful and quite spectacularly large, appeared. "Go, Graveller!" I sent out my newest Pokemon, Graveller, who was a Rock type and well, looked like a rock. "Scyther use Fury Attack!" Matt ordered his Pokemon. Scyther moved in with blinding speed and continuously attacked Graveller by slashing at it's body with it's massive blade-like arms. It wasn't doing much to Graveller at all, so Matt ordered it off. "Ok Graveller?" I said. Graveller nodded. "All right, Graveller use Rock Slide." This was Graveller's only Rock Type attack, and it was very powerful, but not very accurate. "Dodge it" Matt shouted, and Scyther dodged just in time to Matt's shout. "Scyther use Focus Energy!" Scyther started glowing as it stared down Graveller. Focus Energy made the Pokemon's next attack more powerful, but at the cost of needing to use it again if you want it's effects again. "Graveller go with Rock Slide!" I had to be careful, Scyther's next attack was definitely going to hurt. But Scyther dodged the attack again. "Ok Scyther use Slash" Slash was an extremely powerful attack, when combined with Focus Energy was even more powerful. Scyther flew at Graveller, one arm raised as it closed in on Graveller. "Graveller, get out of the way!" I called. However, Graveller being a Pokemon I just captured, wasn't skilled in battles yet, and so instead of dodging just turned to wave at me. Scyther expertly hit it's target. The attack shocked Graveller, as it sent him flying, surprisingly enough. Slash was still a powerful attack, even though it was a normal type and shouldn't have done so much to Graveller. Graveller got up again though, It didn't want to lose and I was in no mood to lose either. "Graveller, use Ro-" I stopped myself to think. If I used Rock Slide, and it missed, the opponent can get a Focus Energy-Slash on to Graveller again, and this time K-O it. I changed my attacks just to be safe. "Graveller use, Body Slam." Graveller jumped into the air, and fell with great speed, directly on top of Scyther, managing to finally damage it. "Good work Graveller." I said, cheering on y Pokemon. "Scyther use Slash again" Matt called. Scyther moved in, this time faster than before, and hit Graveller before we could react. Graveller fell backwards, and as much as it tried, couldn't get up and so it was counted as a faint. "Graveller has fainted and is unable to battle." Leaf announced. "Ah Graveller, you did ok buddy. We'll train hard don't worry." I said, returning it to it's Pokeball.

I called out to Vulpix, who I never kept in it's Pokeball now, to come and aid me for Scyther. Vulpix ran out of a nearby bush and stepped out to the battlefield, ready for battle. "Ok then Scyther, use Fury Attack!" Matt made his move, and Scyther approached swiftly. "Vulpix sidestep quickly and use Flamethrower!" Scyther was within range of hitting Vulpix, and, waiting for it's moment, Vulpix quickly stepped out of the way and returned with Flamethrower. The attack made direct contact, and Scyther got hurt massively. It was not enough to KO however, and Scyther got up and awaited it's Master's orders. "Scyther, Air Slash!" Scyther started to slash at what seemed like nothing, but then moments later, it caused a huge air wave to be fired straight at Vulpix, hitting hard, but not enough to one hit K-O it. "Vulpix use Psychic!" Vulpix started glowing, as did Scyther, and with a massive burst of Psychic energy, Scyther was defeated. "Gah, Scyther return. Ugh you're useless." Matt said. "Go! Fearow!" Fearow is one of Kanto's native Bird Pokemon and is very well known in the region. Fearow showed off it's strength by spreading it's wings and let out a battle cry. "Ok Fearow, don't let me down like Scyther did. Use Agility!" The Fearow started moving from left to right , getting faster with each movement. "Vulpix use Flamethrower!" Vulpix sent a massive fireball right towards Fearow, but with it's incredible speed, Fearow was able to dodge the attack effortlessly. Matt grinned and praised Fearow. "Fearow use your Wing Attack!" he called. Fearow, now with it's Agility boost, hit Vulpix instantly, and very hard too. Vulpix almost fainted, but with it's strength it managed to survive. I knew it wouldn't be able to survive another hit for sure on the next turn. I needed to make this turn count. We needed an attack to hit or we'd be done for. There was nothing I could do, until I remembered another move that Vulpix had. "Vulpix."I took a deep breath and hoped this would hit. "Use Fire Spin!" Vulpix's mouth started burning up, and it ran in circles around Fearow, created a massive ring of fire, trapping it in. Fearow couldn't escape now. "Fearow use Drill Peck!" Matt ordered, probably not knowing Fire Spin trapped Fearow. Fearow tried to attack, but the fire kept it in it's place. "Vulpix use Flamethrower again!" Vulpix launched the fireball at Fearow, and caused huge damage, it also took a bit of damage from the Fire Spin as it closed itself around Fearow. Fearow fell to the ground, unable to handle the attacks anymore."WHAT THE HELL FEAROW?" Matt shouted angrily. "You were meant to win that you idiot, get back" he said "Go Dragonair." A long slender dragon Pokemon appeared, this was the evolution of his starter, Dratini. "Dragonair, I know you won't disappoint me. Use Dragon Rage!" Draonair launched a mysterious blue ball of energy at Vulpix, hit it directly and Ko'd it. "Well done Vulpix, we got rid of Fearow, return!" I said, picking it up off the battlefield, it's eyes glowing in the sun. "You ready Eevee?" I said keeping my gaze fixed on Matt. Eevee jumped down from my arm and now stood in front of me on the battlefield. 

"Dragonair use Thunderbolt" Matt ordered his Dragonair. Storm clouds fored above Eevee. "Eevee dodge and use Bite." Eevee ran out of the way of the Thunderbolt and proceeded to go and attack Dragonair. Dragonair took the hit without any worry. "I thought your Eevee was strong!" Matt jeered. "That's ok, as long as one of us is stronger I suppose. 'Oh, Eevee use Bite. Oh, Eevee use Sand-Attack!" he started mocking me and Eevee and laughed at us. Eevee and I both got annoyed. "I don't want to fight someone who ust wants to mock us because they think they're better than us." I said. "Oh so you know you won't win?" He asked. "Agh that's not it, I just told you what it was." I replied. "So Cody if you forfeit, you do know this will count as your loss, right?" Leaf said. I just nodded. "Ok then. The winner is Matt, by forfeit clause rules." She said, a little sad. "Hahaha!  You idiot, give up and go home, we're not gonna see you at the Indigo League ever. I'm the one who will win, and I'M taking home the championship title, you are never going to be anything more than my weak little idiot of a rival" he said, called back his Dragonair, and left. Was he right? What chance did I have of ever making it to the Indigo leagfue? None. I wasn't a good trainer like everyone else. Maybe I should give up. I sat there pondering those thoughts in my head and just sighed. "Cody." Leaf said. I heard her, but didn't answer. "Don't listen to what he said, you've made it this far, right? Just think, you only need 3 badges to get to the Indigo League. Come on now, get up and just remember you're always one step closer to the goal for evry new step you start making." she said. She was right, I could do this. I got up, put on a smile, and turned to her again. "Thanks Leaf." I said. She smiled. I looked at the road ahead. "Ok then, let's get going." I said.
