Blood. Blue beneath the skin, flowing through the veins. It reaches oxygen, suddenly turns red. Iron, pulsing through the heart. That metallic taste you get when you taste blood. Blood, deep in color, rich, vibrant.
Blood was splattered everywhere. Sergeant Smith had ran towards the direction of the screaming, Carmen's screaming to be more specific.
The other soldiers had followed behind Smith, weapons drawn, bracing themselves for the worst.
"Weapons ready" Sergeant Smith ordered. "Halt" he ordered again, holding up a hand over his left shoulder.
"What is it sir?" Rookie Davidson asked.
"Death" Sergeant Smith replied.
Carmen's body laid near a fallen tree. His blood was splattered across the thick trunk of the tree. Leaves covered in drops of blood and rain. The snow around his dead body, rich with deep red. His jugular was slit open, blood gushing from the deep, open wound. His neck was snapped, his head hanging, lolling to the side, dangling from a few tendons, snapped vertebrae, and thin, stringy veins. The air reeked with blood and death. One of the rookie's, rookie Stevenson, leaned against a tree, bracing himself with his left hand, dropping his gun to the floor and vomiting into the white, crisp snow.
When he finished, he wiped his mouth with his black sleeve, spat into the snow, and looked at the group sheepishly. "Sorry sir" he apologized, directing his attention towards Sergeant Smith.
"It's fine rook" Smith said. He looked at Rookie Davidson. "Get on your com and report to the chancellor. Tell her about the death and alert for immediate scope of the area" he paused. "We have a cold blooded killer on the loose boys"
Rookie Davidson clicked the button on his walkie talkie. "Report to chancellor, come in chancellor"
There was a low hum coming from the com. The hum was interrupted by a high pitched static. Then Abby's voice came through. "Yes, chancellor on"
"Yes chancellor, we have a death to report. Rookie Carmen Delgado has been found dead. We have been given orders by Sergeant Smith to continue scope of the area, confirmation? Do you copy?" Rookie Davidson reported into the com.
"Yes, i copy, order confirmed. Stay safe out there boys" Abby replied. "Over and out"
"Okay boys, you heard her, continue scope of the area" Sergeant Smith ordered.
"Yes sir" the group replied.
Sergeant Davidson continued forward, direction north, latitude and longitude unknown. He felt eyes on him, deep and inquisitive. He turned, pivoting on his left foot. Through the trees were a set of eyes, sun flower yellow, peering through the bushes. The eyes of the tiger.
