Chapter Nine

Training

I got woken up by my way to happy escort at 8 this morning. Breakfast didn't start until 9 but she said I needed to shower and change. I'm pretty sure that was her telling me nicely that I stink. Showering in District 2 isn't a big deal. We only clean ourselves once a week and before the Reaping. Here in the Capital, hot water and soap is at a push of a button. Living here would be so amazing. You don't have to worry about going into The Hunger Games, starving, or stinking. Too bad, I was born in one of the Districts.

Right now, I'm standing in a big circle around our instructor. It makes me think about the training center at home. I would kill to be there instead of here. All the other tributes are looking around at each other. I have my eyes on the girl from district 12. I've learned that she volunteered which is the first from her district. I have a feeling she thinks she can win but maybe there's another reason. I didn't watch the recap of the Reaping but I've heard her little sister was reaped first so she volunteered in her place. Hopefully, she's not a threat. I wouldn't want her in the way of Cato getting home.

Next, my eyes shift to the boy from the same district as her. He's looking around scared. No matter how much he looks around, his eyes always find their way back to the girl from his district. I can't place the look in his eyes. Is it hate? Desire? Maybe even love? They might be in the same situation as Cato and I but I doubt it. She doesn't seem interested in him. It may be an act though. I'm going to have to keep my eyes on them.

The instructor tells us to do whatever but not to fight with each other. I walk over to the knife station and start looking through them to find the right ones. I finally pick out three and throw them. I smile as they land in the center, right where the heart would be. I hear someone clear their throat behind me. I turn around and see the boy from district 1 standing there, smiling at me. I awkwardly smile back.

"I'm Marvel."

"I'm Clove."

"I know. I watched you throw. You didn't miss once. How could that be? It almost seems like you've trained before," he says with a smirk.

We aren't suppose to train for the games but we do. All the 'career' districts do.

"I must be a natural."

"So allies?"

"Ask my district partner, first."

"Hmm, that's funny," he laughs a little.

"What's funny?"

"He told me the same thing."

"I guess we're allies then."

His face lights up for a second then he nods. He walks away, toward his district partner and Cato. I watch them talk for a minute before throwing knifes again.

The Gamemakers dismiss us for lunch after an hour or two. I walk into the lunch room and fill my plate before sitting down next to Cato, across Glimmer who's starting at Cato. I roll my eyes and start eating my soup.

"So Clove, how was training? You looked pretty amazing throwing those knifes. Deadly and cute."

"Thanks Marvel. Training was good."

I finish my food and get up to throw my trash away. I shove the trash in the already full can and turn back around to walk back when I run into someone. I look up and see the boy from district 12 staring down at me.

"I'm so sorry! I didn't see you and by the time I did it was too late. I'm so sorry."

"Don't worry about it."
