Tobias' POV

What have I done?

I slide down on the floor on Beatrice's left side, against another wall. I bury my face in my hands and sigh. I'm terrible.

But I've already got her and was planning to keep her here until next week. I just need to get to her brother, Caleb.

I'll tell him that Beatrice leaves early for school before everyone wakes up and she gates home late after everyone is asleep. Yeah. That's the only plan I've thought of.

My stomach grumbles and I go upstairs, scavenging the fridge for food. I decide to make two turkey sandwiches and fill two glasses of water before going back downstairs.

I slide down against the wall where I was before and set the food down in front of me. I feel too sick to eat, yet I eat anyway.

After I eat, I'm tempted to just throw it right back up but I keep it down and take a sip of my water.

I sigh and just stare at Beatrice.

I'm stupid.

Beatrice's POV

I'm awoken by a pounding headache and an unstandable pain at my jaw, but yet I open my eyes.

Wait, where am I?

I'm up against a concrete wall, and it's a big area, with similar concrete walls at the edges. It seems like a basement, but I can't tell.

Last thing I remember is walking out of the school and then getting pulled away. And then I remember someone giving me an apologetic look. But then I can't remember anything else.

I groan and turn my head to the left, seeing a figure sitting slumped against the wall. He looks familiar but he's looking down onto his hands.

I shift my body weight to face him and clear my throat, instantly agitating it worse.

The boy looks up, dark blue eyes and brown hair. It's Tobias. Tobias Eaton. I look into his eyes, which are full of guilt and sorrow.

He pushes a plate of food over to me with his hand and a glass of water. He sits back against the wall and I cautiously grab the plate and glass.

I bring the glass to my lips and tip it, letting the cold water flow from the glass and down my throat. I'm relieved when I don't feel a burning sensation in my throat and I find the urge to talk.

"Where am I?" My voice comes out as a whisper, Tobias only barely hearing me.

He shrugs, "My house." He whispers back and I can hear the regret in his voice.

I pick up the turkey sandwich and take a bit, enjoying the savory taste. I set the sandwich back down on the plate and look back at Tobias.

"When can I go home?" I ask. I wasn't sure if I should've asked that.

"I don't know. Maybe a week." He shrugs again while looking off into the distance.

I'm confused. Why can't I go home?

"What do you mean?" I can't help but ask.

"I don't know. You can go home before the Choosing Ceremony next week." He answers again, seeming far off from the world.

I just pick up the sandwich and keep eating, until it's gone. I push the plate back to Tobias. I sip on my water until it's gone, Tobias watching my every move. I put the glass next to the plate and Tobias still didn't move.

Just stared at me until I spoke up, "Uh it's kinda cold down here. Do you have any extra pillows or blankets so I can sleep on something?"

I wait for an answer and he finally nods, bringing the dishes into his hands and walking upstairs. He comes down a few minutes later, holding three blankets, and two pillows.

He sets down a big blanket on the floor next to me and hands one to me. He also gives me a pillow.

He goes back to the wall he was at before with one pillow and one blanket and lays down. He sets the pillow under his bed and the blanket over his body.

I get the idea and go over to the blanket set on the floor, dragging the other stuff along with me. I set the pillow down where my head would sit and I lay down, draping the blanket over me.

I lay on my side, facing Tobias. He's on his side, staring at me and I think I see the corners of his mouth twitch.

"Goodnight Beatrice. Oh and sorry about punching you before. I'll explain tomorrow or something." He says and closes his eyes.

I forgot about my jaw until now, reaching up to touch it. It stings at my touch and I bring my hand back down.

I sigh and close my eyes.

I guess the tall boy with the blue eyes captured me.

And I'm hopeless against him.
