A/N: some of this chapter is kind of based off of Divergent in some ways. So, the simulation ideas are all copyrighted of Veronica Roth.

Tobias POV

I wake to an empty feeling in the house.

In my bedroom.

In my heart.

She left last night. I heard the front door as she left, but that's the only time I woke up and then I fell back asleep. Today is Monday, officially.

It's my sixteenth birthday.

Which also means it's simulation test day.

And Choosing Ceremony day tomorrow.

I lazily get out of bed, thinking today will be a bad day. But, no. Then I realize.

I'm free tomorrow.

I'm free of him.

I'm free of Abnegation.

I'm free.

I quickly get dressed, grabbing my bag and running to school, feeling the blood rush in my veins.

I smile when I see the Dauntless, my future allies that I will be with tomorrow.

I smile wickedly and stand in the Abnegation line, admiring the Dauntless. I'm going to be one of them. Running, jumping, being dauntless.

As we wait outside, I grow impatient. That is until they open the doors and we walk inside. Although, I'm eager to just spring into the chair and get my test results.

When we finally enter the rooms after an hour, I quickly sit down and await for the person to give me the serum or whatever.

"Drink this." The dauntless woman gives me a small glass with clear blue liquid. I grab it and quickly swallow it. I close my eyes and wait for the hallucinations to take me over.

"Choose." A voice.

I look at a table, with two baskets. One with cheese, and one with a knife, almost as long as my forearm.

"Choose."

"What would I do with them?" I ask.

"Choose!"

Someone's sassy. But I take the cheese.

"Alright." The voice says again.

I turn around when I here something.

A dog stands a few yards away from me. I then think.

What would a dog be doing here?

There's a young girl behind me, the dog is targeted on. I know what I have to do.

I start sprinting towards the dog and tackle it to be ground, saving the girl.

And then I shoot awake with a yelp, back in the crammed room with the Dauntless woman. She turns to me, with an expression I can't read.

I feel a burn on my lip and I realize I have been biting on it.

"Were you a aware during the simulation?" The woman, Tori, asks.

I know what I have to say.

"No, of course I wasn't. Do you think I would've chewed through my lip if I was?" I reply.

But I was aware. Marcus has taught me.

"Well, congratulations. Your textbook result was Abnegation." Tori tells me. Fantastic. Just what Marcus wanted.

"Aren't you pleased?" Tori asks me.

"I'm sure my other faction members will be."

"I'm asking about you. Not about them."

I sigh. No, I'm not pleased, but that's how it's going to be.

Or is it?

"Tobias, you can say anything here. This is a safe room." Tori reassures me.

I know it's not a safe room. Nowhere is safe.

"I'm pleased." I say firmly. I know I'm lying. And I know I was all happy this morning and the days previous. But then I remembered what I had to.

"You're the one who has to live with your choice," Tori says, "Everyone else will get over it, move on, no matter what you decide. But you never will.

I stand up from my chair and feel unsteady.

It's partly my choice, but Marcus would despise me.

Oh yeah, forgot to explain about Marcus.
