The only thing worse than sitting alone in a cell in the City of Bones was the fear that struck Andina when her brother was finally returned. There was a fresh wound on the left side of his neck, blood trickling down his collarbone. She was standing up and racing towards him before the cell door had even shut.
"What happened?" She demanded immediately, wanting to know who had hurt him. She was already thinking of ways to make them pay.
Jace looked down to the stone floor underneath them. "I'm guilty," he stammered as he slumped forward. "They sentenced me to life."
Andy was struck with shock, staggering backwards. "No," she whispered uselessly. "No, they can't do that."
"They did."
The siblings were sure to get into a fight had they not cut themselves off, hearing the sounds of swords scraping coming from the distance. Both shared a confused look as painful screams began to echo through the corridors. It sounded like a massacre.
"Do you hear that?" A strained but familiar voice that only served to confuse Andy further spoke up from the cell beside theirs.
"Hodge?" She questioned.
There was no time for a reunion, and Jace understood that. "What's happening?" He asked their mentor.
Hodge didn't get a chance to respond before a suffering groan came from outside of their cell. The siblings whipped their heads over to see a Silent Brother stumbling forward, blood falling from a wound in his neck. "Help us," his plea rang out in their minds. It was horrendous to watch him fall forward with a seraph dagger sticking out of his back, knowing they could do nothing.
"Grab his hands," Jace started forward immediately. It nearly worried Andy how clearly he was able to think in the situation they had just been thrusted into. "The lock release in our cells can only be activated if he's still alive."
She moved to help him after he explained, but when they finally got the corpse's hand to reach the panel, there was clearly no more blood pumping through his veins.
"He's gone," she murmured in defeat, sharing a somber look with her brother.
"A shame to lose him, really," a voice drawled, one that Andina would recognize until the end of time for the worst reasons. She stood up as Valentine stepped into view, if for nothing else than to make herself a more viable target than her brother. Of course, the movement only made Jace straighten up beside her.
In his hands, Valentine held the Mortal Sword, which he wiped clean of Silent Brother's blood. "He just wouldn't let go of the Sword," he excused, meeting his eldest daughter's intense glare with a smile.
He stepped over Brother Jeremiah's body and ripped the dagger out of his chest, sticking it back into his holster without even cleaning it. That put him in front of his children's cell, facing them through the cross-sectioned steel.
"You see what they do to you when I'm not here to protect you?" He mused.
They both scowled. "No, this is what they do when you inject your son with demon blood," Jace spat, making Andy's face fall.
Her father appeared to be expecting the reaction from her, smile growing more wicked when she lashed out at the new information. "You injected him with demon blood?" She hissed, nearly incredulous as she thought of the angel blood in her own veins. Her brow furrowed and her eyes grew watery, recalling the sensation of fire in her veins. "Wasn't I enough?"
"But don't you see?" Valentine's eyes brightened as he came closer, face inches away from his daughter. "You were enough, and now it's even better. Good and evil, side by side, ready to take down the world for their dear old dad."
