Chapter Eighteen

Shortly after meeting an actual, real-life angel, the three Morgenstern siblings followed an enraged werewolf into the back of the Chinese restaurant. Andina winced when Luke slammed the kitchen doors open and walked into the dining area, the glass inserts shaking from the force. 

"How could you not tell me that?" He shouted, stomping into the room. Andy would think he was being dramatic if she didn't understand where he was coming from. Apparently, Clary hadn't been entirely honest with him when she was devising her plan earlier that evening. And it had ended up getting Luke's sister kidnapped.

Clary strode past Andy as the older woman let herself fall into one of the vinyl booths that lined the room. "The downworld would be in total chaos if they knew what that sword could do," the redhead reasoned.

Jace was quick to back her up, adding, "There would be uprisings everywhere," as he moved to stand next to her.

Luke spun around, an incredulous look on his face. "So you're saving the downworlders from themselves?" He questioned, not giving them a chance to answer. "We never asked!"

Clary frowned at the man she thought of as a father. "We didn't even know that Valentine could activate the sword until we realized he had an angel," she explained. It didn't really help, though. Clary had a chance to tell him the truth earlier and she didn't take it. "Luke, I didn't want you to worry."

"Well it's too late for that," Luke muttered over his shoulder.

Andy assumed they were going to drop the conversation and let Luke stew for a few moments. Really, she was just hoping for a few moments of silence. Then Jace decided to step in and speak up, defending Clary's actions. "Look, you don't understand, all right?"

Luke turned and glared at him. "I do understand!" He snapped. "He has my sister."

Andy scrunched up her nose as soon as she felt Jace's gaze land on her. She hated when he let things get personal. She focused her attention on the wound on her leg, pressing her palm against it and frowning at the pain.

Jace shook his head and turned his attention back to Clary, who was gaping at him like a fish out of water. They shared a conflicted look for a moment and Luke took notice quickly.

He narrowed his eyes at the space in between them, his face falling flat with disappointment. "What else aren't you three telling me?"

Andy glanced up at his question, furrowing her brow. Clary glanced back at her for a moment as if asking her for moral support, but Andy had no idea what Clary was thinking, so she offered a small shrug.

The redhead huffed and turned back to Luke. "The angel," she started softly. "He showed us something."

"On the rooftop," Jace added, sensing Clary was struggling to find the words. "He showed us a vision on how to destroy the sword."

Luke was skeptical, his forehead wrinkling. "How do you know that's what he was telling you?" He asked.

Andy rolled her eyes, quickly butting in before either of her siblings could answer. "We don't." She ignored the sad eyes and furrowed brow to her left as she told Luke the truth. "We don't know anything about the Sword other than legends and truth telling–" She cut herself off when she noticed the sneer her brother was giving her and snapped, "don't look at me like that, Jace, you know I'm right. We're swimming in oil here."

Clary looked defeated, but her words said otherwise as she argued, "There's no other explanation. When the demon touched the Sword, he and the Sword both... disintegrated."

Jace agreed, stepping forward. "Luke, it was a demon I've never seen before."

"Then go find it," Luke said, earning excitement from the younger Shadowhunters while the eldest rolled her head back and groaned. "I'll go out and see if that bastard left any clues for us to track him down."
