The morning after the funeral, Clary had found Jace trying to break through to his eldest sister in another training room and yet again failing. In an attempt to bring her siblings together and also find answers to the questions that had kept her up all night, she brought them to her room to try and figure out how she drew that rune. Mostly, all that had done is result in the two bickering whilst fighting over who should hold the Gray Book.
Eventually, Jace had torn it out of Andy's grip because it was his copy. He flipped through it quite a few times, muttering a "no" to himself here and there while Clary paced the room slowly. Andina was perched on top of the dresser, staring at her brother in annoyance as if each exaggerated breath he took was a personal attack towards her. The room may have been silent, but the tension was thick and very palpable.
It was hard for Clary to avoid feeling angry with Andy for not attending their mother's funeral, but when Clary tried to understand it from Andy's point of view, she could entirely see why the girl hadn't come. All Andina had ever known of Jocelyn Fairchild was her attempt to kill Jace. And Clary had realized in some of her first interactions with Andy that her top priority was usually her brother.
The blond reached the back cover for the third time before declaring, "Yeah, I'm not seeing it in the Gray Book." Andy rolled her eyes and hopped off of the dresser. She walked behind Jace and plucked the book from her brother's grasp, muttering, "give it here," as she began to sift through the pages of runes that she had memorized long ago.
Clary huffed, leaning against the bed post and picking up her sketchbook lazily. "Well, isn't that thing supposed to have every single rune?" She asked. The frustration between her siblings was getting to her.
"Some of them are removed," Jace explained, watching his older sister with narrowed eyes as she flipped through the book like she could find the rune better than he could. "They're reserved for the most elite members of the Clave."
Clary furrowed her brow as she stood up again, leaning her head back in exasperation and abandoning her sketchbook on the bed as she stood. "I'm not exactly elite, so why do I know it?"
The golden boy shrugged, making Clary scoff. He had done a lot for her, but sometimes his resistance to be helpful without being given an ultimatum got on her nerves. It was something she and Andy had in common.
Andy noticed the discomfort between the two and looked up for a moment, offering, "Maybe you saw it somewhere and you just don't remember."
"No," Clary shook her head, starting to pace once again, "it just- It appeared, like a vision. Like someone or something was trying to send me a message." She paused before whipping around like she had come to some sort of revelation. "Maybe it's from our mom," she daydreamed, making Andy's face fall.
"Clary," Andy started, closing the book and tossing it onto the bed. "I know you miss her-"
"How else do you explain it?"
Andy and Jace shared a look, both at a loss. Andy gnawed on her lip and turned her gaze to the floor, letting her brother know that she wasn't going to acknowledge Clary's beliefs. With a sigh, he turned to the redhead and confessed, "I don't know."
Clary frowned as she looked between the two of them, believing they were keeping something from her. Which they definitely were, but it wasn't about this. "You know, I'll just go ask Izzy and Alec. Maybe they'll know something."
She received their opposition before she had even finished speaking, the siblings snapping in unison; Jace with a firm "no" and Andy with, "Don't drag anyone else into this."
"If you tell anyone else, they could be in danger, too," Jace explained when he realized she was going to ignore them. "The Clave is quick to persecute anyone or anything they don't understand."
