Gideon's POV

I sigh. I have spent the last four hours with the Mysteries of Time. I've tried to find anything, even one sentence that could tell me how to get back. I hear someone walking behind my door. I place the book in one of the drawers of the table, but the steps don't stop. Out of curiosity I go to the door and check who was walking behind it (my room is on the top floor so there are usually no people just walking around).
In the hallway is Mr. George. He is walking away from my door.

"Mr. George", I say and step out of my room. "Please wait a minute."

Mr. George turns around. "mmhm?"

"I have a... book, and I'm afraid I can't interpret it", I say and look over my shoulder to check no one is listening us.

"That's how I feel with most books", he says jokingly. "Well, show me the book and let's see what I can do."

I lead Mr. George to my room and the take the book from the drawer. I give the book to Mr. George who opens the book and turns the pages carefully.

"This is a very old book, you better treat it carefully."

"I have", I say. I don't want Mr. George to think I treat books like old socks.

Mr. George doesn't answer. Instead he asks: "Where did you get this?"

"From the library."

"mhhm... And what are you trying to find from this book, exactly?"

"I'm trying to find something that could help me to get away from this century." Mr. George's brain seem to have a bad day at thinking. Maybe he didn't sleep well.

Mr. George turns pages as fast as he can without ripping anything, like he's looking for a particular part. Finally he finds what he was looking for, and gives the book back to me.

"Read that", he says and adjusts his glasses.

A person unable to re-elapse back to their own particular time, has a chance to return by holding on to something or someone that will elapse back to the wanted year. Since objects don't flung around in time, the other part in returning has to be a person. When the other person elapses back, the another person will simply move with them.

"How didn't I find this on my own? I thought I had read the whole book even backwards."

"People don't always focus on the small details", Mr. George says and walks away from my room. I hear him greeting someone else in the hallway. That's odd. Already two people visiting this exact hallway. Maybe the Lodge is keeping a sport-event, and people try to get as much steps as they can to win the game.
This time the steps stop at my door. I don't turn around because the door is still open. If the person wants to come in, the way is clear. Probably it's just the count.

"Gideon?", a familiar voice asks.

I turn around and see Gwendolyn, standing at the door. She smiles really shyly, not knowing what to expect. I walk fast to her, take her out of the doorway and close the door behind her. Luckily no one else was in the hallway, except Mr. George.

"What on earth are you thinking!", I try to keep  my voice down so no one else won't hear it, but I'm not sure how well I succeed.

"What are you saying? I came here to get you back", Gwen leans forward so she can hiss the words quietly to me. She grabs my shoulders and squeezes them, like sending signals that help me to understand. "If this works, everything will be sorted out in no more than five minutes."

"Are you completely out of your mind? This is all too dangerous, you should never have come!", I bury my nails to my fists, trying to call myself down. Even though I have received new information about getting back, I can't accept that she came here.

Gwen takes her hands off my shoulders. Her face has lost its usual shine, and her eyes shimmer from tears. "Even if I did this all for you? To get you back?" The way she says 'you' is like glass breaking into thousand shards, and I have to force myself not to look at her in the eye. They are full of disappointment, I can tell.

"Gwen, look, I really appreciate that you came -"

"Appreciate?", she sniffs. "Of course you do, you always appreciate everything I do!"

"Please, Gwen, let me finish", I try to find her gaze but she turns her face away from mine.

I sigh. "Seriously, I do, but you have to understand that this -"

Suddenly someone knocks at the door. "Diamond!"

Gwendolyn freezes and glances at the door. Her face is full of amazed and fearful details and I would like to wipe them away, but it's totally inappropriate in this situation. This is the worst timing the count has ever made.

"Come, quickly", I say and open a closet for her. There's barely no clothes, so Gwendolyn fits in quite well with her poofy dress. I close the closet and open the door. The count is standing there with an orange in his hand. I stop on my tracks before the door is full open and freeze to the spot. Is he trying to poison Gwen? If he is, how did he know she was here?

The count laughs at me. "Don't worry, I'm not going to force you to eat this. Have you done some... exercise, your breathing seems quite heavy?"

I immediately hold my breath. I don't know where the reaction came from. "I just came, I ran the stairs up."

The count looks at me like he wouldn't believe me. Maybe it's true that he can read minds. I start to think the most useless facts I've learned.

But suddenly the eyes of the count sharpen. "What do you have in your closet?"

I shrug. "Clothes?"

"Don't lie to me diamond, are you hiding someone there?", the count asks and walks to the closet. I try to run before him, but the count has longer legs, and he's the first one on the closet.

"Seriously, there's nothing but -"

The count opens the closet, but Gwendolyn is already gone. The count's shoulders shrink.

" - clothes", I end my words.
