Gwendolyn's POV

When Mr. Marley (whose face was still red from earlier) had taken me to the limousine, I remembered that my chronograf was still behind the pine tree where I left it. I cursed quietly, thinking how I always forget important things and remember everything else that is not that special. For example, on my latest history test I forgot what happened on January 27th on 1593 (Vatican started a trial that lasted seven years against a scholar named Giordano Bruno) but at least I remembered how your highness / majesty / worship separate from each other. Or then Mr. Whitman just makes totally impossible tests. After all thinking doesn't make the chronograf fly to me through the limousine window.

"Hey!", I say to the driver and tap the chair. "Can we stop for a minute, I'm afraid I left something to the Lodge."

"Uhm, I'm not sure if that's a good idea, you know...", after that the driver takes a breath so deep that I wonder if he's trying to make the longest inhale to get in the guinness world records- book. "Can't it wait until tomorrow?"

"No way, it's really special! I'd rather have uncontrolled time travels than leaving the chr- that thing there."

The driver sighs again and turns the car over. Luckily we haven't made it too far from the Lodge, it's only five minutes away. When we're in front of the sidewalk I hop out of the car and run to the trees without looking back. I think I won't be able to handle the driver's face when he sees I wanted to get back only to get something from behind a pine tree.
When the chronograf is safely in my hands and in the car, I don't bother to ask what is wrong with the driver's mouth. It seems like it has locked open, and the driver can't close it himself.

"And that was special your super special thing?", He doesn't let me to defend myself or even nod before he launches into full complaining -mode.

"I should call this a waste of time, unneeded action, actually I should make a report of your behaviour, this is totally unreasonable, I can already hear their words when they find out about this-"

Well, I don't want to hear their 'words' either, he makes them sound so very scary.

"Excuse me, can I ask you something?", I ask with my friendliest voice ever.
The driver's mouth shuts immediately when I say those words. Good that we didn't need a doctor to close it.

"Depends on your question", he says and tries to get the car keys in his hand, failing miserably. Key-hunting while looking to the opposite direction at the same time will never be a success. The result is just hopeless fumbling for the keys.

"Are you related to Mr. Marley someway? You remind me about him a lot."

"Well, actually we're kind of siblings. I was adopted to the Marley family at a very young age." I didn't expect this to happen. This new piece of information makes me want to pat his shoulder or hug him or something.

"Oh, I'm really-"

"No no no", the driver interrupts. "Don't be sorry for me, I think I liked the Marleys more I would've liked my biological family."

After that we drive along the streets of London and get stuck on two traffic jams. Neither of us say a word during the long drive home. When the driver turns left from the green lights, I can't hold the question anymore.

"Why's that?", I didn't understand his words earlier. Didn't he miss his own family at all? Didn't he even want to know who they were?

"What?"

"Why do you think you liked the Marleys more?"

"Oh, I just think they were the best I could've ever had", the driver says before he pulls up to my home street.

When I step inside from the door, I see Charlotte's cute shoes and jacket already in the hall. Of course she was free to leave on  her own and go by a subway , being at least twenty minutes faster.

I see my mom standing on the other side of the hall. She has a plate and a towel in her hands, which means the dinner is already over and she's cleaning the dishes. I don't know anymore how many times I've been late from the dinner.

"Hello, Gwendolyn. Where have you been with that big bag? And in that dress?"

"What dress, what dress?", Caroline runs from the dining table, her face covered in cherry pudding, and stops next to mom completely amazed.

"Uhm, I had to-"

"Gwendolyn was in the school's drama club, they are making a historical performance. Of course they picked Gwenny for the main role", I turn around and see Charlotte walking down the stairs, her smile as bright as the sun. What is wrong with her? Usually she tries to avoid me as much as she can and is being salty if she has to talk to me, and now she has helped me twice in one day? Does she have an uncommon disease that makes people act the opposite way they used to?

"Drama club?", mom repeats surprised.

"Hasn't Gwenny told you? She joined three weeks ago", Charlotte says and sits to her own place in the table, while Mr. Bernhard appears from nowhere and gives her a bowl of pudding.

"Three weeks ago?", aunt-Maddy says from the table.

"Oh, congratulations then, I suppose", mom says and puts the plate to  its place in the cupboard.

"Uhm, thanks", I say and give a little smile to everyone, a little bigger one to Charlotte. She wont look at me anymore though. Maybe the disease is losing its hold of her. What a shame.

"I'll go and change my clothes", I say and head to the stairs. "Leave me a little bit of that pudding, will you!"

"Of course", aunt-Maddy says from the dining hall. "Where are my lemon candies?"

In my room, I see a piece paper on my bed. I go to it and take it to my hand. Tidily folded paper, from a notebook. I open it and read the short, neatly written text:

Remember that favor Gwenny, I want to know what you and your friend are planning. That's my price for helping you out.

Charlotte even added a little smiley face on the end, seems like she didn't suffer from any disease after all.
