Gwendolyn's POV

"Fine. He can find the solution by himself."

"No no, I'm sure he didn't mean it like that."

"What else would he have meant? His message was quite straight: 'go away, you're just in the way'."

"Maybe he was just shook from your surprising appearance and was really worried about your safety. I think that's actually really sweet."

"I don't care."

"About that he was worried about your safety or about that it's sweet?"

"Both."

A big sigh.

"Gwen, when was the last time you ate something?"

"Why?"

"Because I think you're so grumpy because your blood sugar is dangerously low."

"Ugh not you too! Everyone has said the same thing throughout the whole day."

"Well maybe you should just give him a second chance."

Someone knocks on the door. I've been in the phone with Leslie already for half an hour, and when Leslie mentions it, I realize I am getting really hungry.

"Sorry Leslie, I have to go."

When I walk to the door someone knocks on it again. "Come on, Gwen -"
I open the door and see Charlotte standing behind it, her hand frozen in the air in a neat ninety degree angle.

"Hey, Charlotte", I say and close the door behind my back. I don't want her to see my room: clothes have been laying in the floor since last Tuesday and schoolbooks have somehow found their way under the bed. Her room is obviously straight from an interior design magazine.

"You have to go to the Lodge", Charlotte says when her hand is again by her side. It has a new simple pearl bracelet in it. I wonder where she has got it.

"What? Why?"

"They called just a minute ago. Apparently they have a new mission for you to attend to."

"It's eleven in a Saturday morning!"

"A limousine will pick up you in ten minutes."

"What?!"

I run back to my room and straight to the mirror. My hair is still up and all messy and I have my pyjamas on. What would Mr. Marley say if he saw me in a blue pyjama with pictures of zebras on?

"I said that you'll be ready in that time. Or was I wrong?"

"Yes, one hundred percent wrong", I say as I try to find decent clothes from the floor. Finally I accept a grey jumper and a pair of jeans. While I'm changing clothes, Charlotte walks to a window and leans out, admiring the view. For a second I think how fun it would be if I pushed her down to the ground.

"I can already see the limousine..."

I sigh and run out of the room. Stupid Charlotte. Every single time I think she would be changing into a nicer person, she does something that totally breaks the illusion.

When I'm standing in front of the chronograf, dressed in a luxurious red dress and my hair in a high bird nestle -like style, I'm ready to go on a "secret mission". Although compared to my own time travels, this is really not that top secret.

"You can put your finger inside the ruby whenever you're ready", Falk DeVilliers says. He's standing on my left side, holding a diary of the Lodge in his hands. I want to get out of his eyesight as fast as possible, he's staring at me like everybody's lives would now depend from my actions.

The alchemy laboratory hasn't changed at all since 1773. Except the table: it has been replaced by a comfortable armchair.
I walk out of the laboratory to the cold and drafty hallways. I wonder how many spiders there are in the walls without me knowing. I fasten my pace when an idea of them running on my dress flashes in my head.

"No entering from here young lady", I hear someone saying when I'm almost running to the stairs. A man walks from the corner that has no torches near it. That's why I didn't see him.

"Excuse me?"

"today's motto?", the man says. He looks like he's going to lose his patience any second.
Today's motto, I totally forgot about it already. Falk had read it to me just before we walked into the alchemy laboratory. Was it 'temperatur mutantum, no mutantum in'... I decide to go with a risk:

"Temperatur mutantum..."

The man sighs. "Close enough. The correct phrase is Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis. you're free to go."

I nod to the man and head upstairs. Dark hallways change to staircases full of light. I choose one at random and start following them.

Suddenly I hear two people speaking, a couple stairways down. I stop and recognize the voices: it's Gideon and the count! My heart jumps a little before I remember how rude Gideon was the last time I saw him.

In the next second only one pair of stairs is separating us. I start walking again, so it wouldn't look so dumb when they see me.

"Oh!", I say when they appear behind a marble pillar. I quickly say the first lie that comes to mind: "I must be lost, it's really hard when there are so many stairs here."

The count just smiles to me: "Well, you'll get use to it when you visit here more often. May I ask, why are you here? And what is your name?"

I keep my eyes away from Gideon. After a while, I can't control myself and glance at him unaware. What could be a good fake name?

"Umm.. I'm miss... Purpleplum."

I can see from the corner of my eye how Gideon's eyebrows rise to the sky. I can hardly keep the laugh inside.

"Well, miss Purpleplum, if you follow me, I can show you a place where you can rest for a couple of minutes."

Gideon is shaking his head like crazy, but I don't care about him right now. "I'd like to", I say and give the count my hand.
