Gideon's POV
"But... there was a red flash...", the count loses his words frequently. He definitely doesn't understand what he saw... or what he thinks he saw.
"Maybe your eyes were just doing tricks?", I try to sound innocent and step closer to look at the closet myself.
The count kneels down and takes something from the closet. Then he straightens his legs and examines the object in the window light. It's a hairpin, with a little red jewel at the end of it.
"A ruby", the count says and twistes the head of the pin in the sunlight. The jewel is shimmering and dazzling, reflecting the rays of the sun. I remember the little sparkles in Gwen's hair, which looked almost like little drops of blood.
Suddenly the count drops the hairpin and crushes the ruby in thousand little pieces with his heel. The sound that the braking jewel causes is heartbreaking, it's like a real ruby heart breaking apart. I can't stop looking at the shattered jewel that is only fine powder anymore.
"And this", the count points at the dust, "is going to happen to the real ruby when I find her". After that he turns and walks away from the room, jacket flaps fluttering in the air.
I gulp. Gwendolyn's future isn't looking bright if I can't come up with anything.
I walk to the desk in front of the window. As I'm opening the drawer that holds paper and pencils, my eyes get stuck to the outside view. A bird is sitting on an oak branch. When I squint to see clearer, I see the bird is a raven. It's watching its surroundings peacefully, checking every little leaf on the ground and clouds in the sky.
Suddenly a rock flies through the air and hits the bird. The rock hits the left wing and the bird loses its balance. It starts falling towards the ground, unable to fly because of the damaged wing. Feathers are flying and playing with the wind as the bird can't control the speed of almost one and a half meters per second.
I have to turn my head away before the raven hits the ground. I can't understand who wants to hurt innocent birds, or animals in general. Is it because their ignorance, not knowing what will be the consequences of their action? Or just out of sick joy? People who hurt another living beings to get joy are rotten inside.
I take the last sheet of paper left in the drawer and start writing. I love the sound that the ink makes when it moves on paper, and the way how fiber sucks the ink, making the writing little messy.
When I've written everything I wanted, I fold the paper twice and get up from the chair.
I look out of the window again, but the raven is gone. Someone has lifted it from the ground and taken it to a place where it isn't under everyone's eyes.
I open the door and step to the hall. No one is in the hallway, and I can hear my steps echoing from the walls and the floor.
When I'm one floor lower, I see the count walking from an opposite direction. I try to put the letter in my pocket before he sees me but apparently I'm one second too slow:
"Diamond, don't go anywhere. I was just about to get you from your room", the count says as he walks to me "What do you have there?"
"Oh, just this", I say and show him the letter, trying to look normal. "I actually should deliver this to Mr. George".
The first lie I got in my mind is convincing the count enough.
"Mhmhm... May I ask what that letter holds inside it?"
Sigh, how can the count always ask the hardest questions at the worst time?
"They are just.... just for his... scientific experiment", Even I don't understand the gibberish I'm trying to produce.
The count looks at me with his sharp eyes. Suddenly I hear his voice inside my head, without his lips moving.
"You'd better not lie to me next time, Diamond."
I freeze. The count has just spoken inside my head. Maybe the rumors are true and he has some telepathic powers. Suddenly coldness spreads on my whole face.
"Understand?"
I nod just enough that the count can see it. After a second I notice that I have been holding my breath the whole time, and gasp for air. Gratefully I let air fill my lungs to the very limit.
"Off you go then", the count says and points forward the hall, "I think I saw him somewhere near the dragon hall five minutes ago."
*
The count was right, I hear Mr. George before I even see him. He's humming a melody that I've never heard.
"Mr. George!", I say and jog to him.
"Ah, hello", Mr. George says, "what are you doing here?"
"I have something very important for you", I say and show him the letter. Mr. George raises his eyebrows questioningly.
"I know you have your ways to be both in this present time and in the future, so when you have the next opportunity, please give this to Gwendolyn. It's really important that she reads this."
Mr. George takes the paper from my hand and puts it to his own pocket:
"I think you came just in time."
***
Yay, it's weekend again and 'm on holidays now! How about you, when do you have holidays? :)
Btw, I actually counted how fast the raven was about to fall (the first time I needed to calculate velocity for a bigger meaning than just doing exercises to my notebook, thanks physics.). Let's think that the tree is 10 meters high, and the bird fell to the ground in 7 seconds (is that even close to reality :,D?):
V= s/t 10meters : 7seconds= 1,4 (actually 1,428571428571429) meters per second.
Don't forget to elapse daily,
See you!
