Braelin's POV
I was avoiding Cameron like the plague. After I showed Cameron around my house yesterday, we had gotten closer and I was in the middle of whooping his ass in GTA5 when something nearly happened. Something I wasn't proud of and shouldn't have even crossed my mind but Cameron was more than just gorgeous. He was smart, funny, athletic-- Snap out of it Braelin that's how the two of you nearly kissed in the first place!
"You okay Braelin?" Selena asked looking concerned and I shrugged it off.
"I'm fine, just excited for my first day."
"That's the spirit!" She said with a grin before showing me around her uncle's restaurant and I admired how gorgeous it really was. The restaurant was built on a beach that overlooked the ocean and the inside reminded me of a sports bar with the flat screen TV hanging off the walls and the bar that took up half of the restaurant while the rest was tables for anyone who didn't want to be around the bar atmosphere. Selena had gotten me a job working as one of the waitresses working both in and out of the bar but since it was my first day I had to be paired with someone before I could work on my own.
"I'll get Cameron and you two can get started," she said starting to walk away before I stopped her.
"Does it have to be Cameron?"
"Uh no, I guess not. You can be partnered up with Alex."
"Great," I said taking a deep breath of relief.
"Is everything alright with you and Cameron?" She asked and I fake smiled hoping she would believe it.
"Of course. Everything is fine."
"Mhm," she said not believing a word I was saying. "You'll tell me later right?"
Knowing I would have to anyways, I nodded and she grinned before introducing me to Alex. She was a gorgeous tan skin color and I could already tell she wasn't completely white so she had to be mixed with something. She had black curly hair that fell mid back with hazel eyes and bright red lipstick.
"Nice to meet you, Alex, I'm Braelin," I said sticking out my hand and she shook it graciously with a bright smile.
"Nice to meet you Braelin."
"Sorry for asking but what's your background?"
"No worries and Hispanic," she replied happily and I could tell she was proud of her heritage like I was of mine.
"Oh, so your Mexican?" I asked her smile faltered a bit before she took a deep sigh.
"Something like that, come on let's take these orders," I followed behind to the bar area feeling like I had offended her in some way but that moment passed when we stopped in front of an older white man who was watching the football game with extreme intensity.
"Hi sir, I'm Alex and this is one of the new workers Braelin, can we get you something?"
"A beer and make it quick Mexican."
"Yes sir," she replied trying to keep the smile on her face. We headed over to a few more customers and they treated us the same way; Ignoring me and calling her Mexican. It was getting old and quick. Finally, it was our first break and we sat in the waitress area eating snacks and checking our social media's before I finally spoke.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?" She asked confused.
"Calling you Mexican. I made an assumption--"
"That being Hispanic meant you were Mexican," she finished for me and I nodded before she shrugged. "I'm used to it, I guess I was just hoping you were different."
"What do you mean?"
"Your black and I'm sure people make assumptions about you every day that your dumb or ghetto but I didn't and I was hoping you wouldn't either."
"I promise to never make assumptions again, deal?"
"Deal," she said shaking my hand before checking her watch. "It's time for us to to get back to work now."
"Alright let's go." I was following her out of the room when Cameron walked in and our eyes connected almost immediately.
"Braelin."
"Hey, Cameron gotta go," rushing out of the room I ignored Alex laughing at me and headed to our next table who was a lady with two kids.
"Hi, I'm Braelin and this is Alex, what can I get you guys?"
"We'll take two burgers and fries and two sprites," the lady said politely and I noticed Alex smiling genuinely for the first time since we started working.
"Of course and can we get you guys some coloring books to play with in the meantime?" Alex said asking the kids and they nodded eagerly. "Alright, we'll be right back."
Alex and I put in the order with the chef before heading to another table with a white woman who was scrolling through her phone.
"Hi ma'am, I'm Alex and this is my friend--"
"I don't care," she said cutting Alex off before picking up the menu. "Let me get a salad and a glass of red wine and bring it before you get deported please?"
"Yes ma'am," Alex muttered clenching her hands into fists.
"Quick question? where's your sombrero?" She said smirking and I noticed Alex glaring.
"It's covering your fat ass, can we get it back now?" I shot back and her mouth dropped open.
"How dare you!"
"How dare us? Since we showed up at this table you've been nothing but a rude racist."
"I want to see your manager right now!"
"What seems to be the problem?" A man who looked remarkably like Cameron asked and I recognized him from the picture as his Uncle who owned the restaurant. Shit!
"These rude waitresses of yours have the audacity to call me a racist." Alex and I explained the situation of what happened and he listened to both sides before turning to the woman.
"I am truly sorry-" he said to her and she smiled triumphantly, "-that people like you still exist in this world. I will have to ask you to leave the premises as people like you are not welcome here."
"But--"
"And that goes for anyone who treats anyone of my employees like that!" he yelled getting the attention of everyone in the restaurant and a few people started clapping causing me to smile before Cameron and I locked gazes. He gave me a look letting me know that sooner than later we were going to have to talk and I nodded agreeing. Hopefully later rather than sooner...
