February 2013
Kristen was getting frustrated with her phone. Well, no, that was a lie. She was frustrated over her boyfriend. Time zones were what she hated the most at the moment. Her day had been so boring and she was looking forward to speak with Rob. So far his schedule was tight and they weren't able to find lots of suitable time to call each other. But luckily today had been his day off, if she had read correctly his schedule, that she more or less knew by heart. Looking over the clock on her phone, she checked the time, and it was currently 4pm into the next day where he was. That was the reason she was unable to understand why he wasn't picking up his phone. All day she had refrained herself to call, to let him rest a bit and not sound like a clingy girlfriend.
For the third time she made a call to him, the buzzing sound annoying her every passing seconds. She swore if the voicemail turned on again, her phone would meet the wall.
"Hey baby!" Robert's voice echoed in the bedroom and Kristen almost let her iphone fall onto the comforter of the bed she was laying on. Holding her phone up she could see his face showing up on her screen. His smile was bright, even though he looked exhausted. Witnessing that she almost felt guilty for calling him when he could use the time to rest. "How are you? What time is it in LA anyway?"
Kristen giggled at his confused face trying to work out the time difference. Slowly she rested her phone on the top of her swollen stomach, still holding it with her right hand. "It's 9.30pm here. And I'm, I mean, we're fine" Following her words she stroked her stomach.
"Show me." His voice was full of excitement over seeing her belly. Kristen happily applied to his demand and stood up to go to body length mirror in her walk-in closet. There she turned the camera of her iPhone for Robert to be able to see her fully. She smiled looking at her reflection and let her head fall to look at the place where their child was growing more and more everyday. Kristen still had a weird time grasping the fact she was almost seven months pregnant, more than halfway done. "You're so beautiful." Robert's sweet whispering got her out of her daze, then she looked up at her reflection for a few seconds. She was wearing one of his t-shirt with some shorts. Nothing unusual for her but not extraordinary either. "Pull up your shirt. I wanna see it."
Slowly she raised his t-shirt under her breasts. Silence followed between and she imagined he was there with her, touching her belly or kissing it. Instead he was miles away. Kristen closed her eyes. Everytime she had him on the phone she was overly emotional a moment in her days she hated it. But more so, she didn't want him to see her sad or crying. He had to deal with work, and him worrying about her would not help for his focus on filming 'The Rover', she thought.
"Did the baby kick today?" Robert asked once Kristen sat back down on their bed. She nodded as an answer smiling lovingly at him. "Definitely a boy then!"
"All babies kick, that's nature." She could only laugh at him and his constant nonsense over the sex of the baby. Not from lack of wanting to know, but so far their kid was hiding from them, not revealing whether a boy or a girl they were going to have. Kristen yawned a bit then.
"You should go to sleep baby." Robert gently told her.
"No, I wanna stay with you." She rolled onto her right side and set her phone against a pillow, so she didn't have to hold it anymore. "I'm laying, it's resting enough." Rob simply rolled his eyes at her. "My mum came this afternoon. She bought clothes for the baby, I told her to stop but she's so stubborn."
"What is she buying anyway? We don't know the sex." He snorted then got up from the bed he was sitting on. Kristen watched him with attention, wondering what he was doing.
"She's resourceful! You have no idea how many unisex clothes she can find. The baby won't even wear them all. You wanna see them?" She started to get up not waiting for him to reply, and walked back into her closet, where she was stocking the baby clothes for now. Her arms full of packages she sat back down, crossing her legs to support her stomach. "Look at this!" Kristen was holding a nice white onesie with nice green leaves in front of the camera for Rob to see. Not hearing back from him, she put it down and looked at her screen. The smile on her face fell down. "Rob-" She started with a whisper.
"I'm sorry baby." Rob's face was indeed apologetic, but his action showed the contrary to Kristen. All she was seeing was her boyfriend talking to his co-stars, who were laughing loudly and totally oblivious to the fact he was on the phone with her. Knowing what was coming she sadly sighed and looked away for a second, hiding her face with her long, wavy brown hair. "I gotta go. The guys want to go into town and with the long drive, you know. I'll call you back, I promise. I love you." Kristen barely had time to turn back, to at least say goodbye to him, that the call ended.
Frozen, there on her bed, her lap full of baby clothes that she couldn't even share her excitement about with the future daddy. Passing a hand through her hair she took a deep breath and tilted her head back, in a vain effort to hold back her tears. She was all alone in this situation, and there was nothing she could do. Rob was leaving her without realising it. Of course she didn't mind him hanging out with the guys, but to sacrifice the few times he had with her was breaking her heart. In the month he had been gone that unfortunately hadn't been the first time he hung up on her, barely acknowledging her presence.
All she wanted was at least a full hour with him. No interruption. Just them talking about nothing and everything. Apparently that was too much to ask.
In the end the tears fell down on her cheeks all on their own. Missing him was killing her. Of course she fulfilled her days like she always did, but the inability to have news of him was taking a toll on her, and with the hormones of her pregnancy it was an exploding mix. Kristen let herself lie down on her bed, not caring one bit about the clothes falling on the floor or scattering everywhere on her bed.
Was he happy to be alone? Did he not care about having some news of her? Was that what he wanted, to go out to drink beers all the time at the local pub? Those nights were the worst for Kristen. Doubts were in her mind, as well as fear. Of course she trusted him. But what could be expected of a pregnant girlfriend on the verge of giving birth, all alone on the other side of the world, while her boyfriend was living the dream not caring one bit about her and their future child. Everything was on a stand. Nothing was ready for their child and she was tired of waiting around for his opinion over the nursery. When he will be back, only a month will be left before the birth. And that was not how she imagined her first pregnancy would have been, as much as she was happy about it.
Tears still falling down, Kristen made tiny circles on her stomach with her left hand. She was not alone. She had her unborn baby.
