"I thought we could go shopping for the playroom?" Kristen asked Rob the next day over breakfast. He turned back from the open door of the fridge, getting a box of juice out.
"Isn't the nursery big enough?"
"Sure." She replied between two bites of pancakes. "But I want separate space between where the baby will sleep and play. So the nursery is not gonna be all fun and games, you know?"
Rob took a sit in front of her and was amazed by all the details she got already. He never thought of a playroom, only in a year or so maybe. Without her he would fail being a dad, he was sure of it.
"Well, yeah. Okay." Kristen smiled at him happily. All he wanted was to please her.
In the car Kristen was getting anxious so Rob took her left hand into his. Her head was tilted on the right looking over the window as they were driving up to the store. What was on her mind was easy to guess, and if he could he would take all her worries he would.
"We could go somewhere else if you want?" Rob's voice filled up the silence in the car. She sighed before looking at him, his face focused on the road.
"I wanna do this with you. They'll always find us anyway." She was resigned and that saddened him but he had to cheer her up.
"Okay. Just don't stress yourself out, both of you." He let go of her hand to touch her belly. "I still think it's a boy you know." Kristen giggled back at him. "What?" He asked feigning offence.
"You just want a mini you. An heir."
"Robert junior! It sounds perfect." Focusing on the road he didn't see her rolling her eyes.
"We ain't royalty! Whether it is a boy or a girl, we won't name it after us and you know it."
"Why not?" Of course he was kidding about naming their kid 'Robert' like him, but as a middle name it was a nice possibility.
"I don't know." Kristen shrugged and looked down at her stomach, Rob's hand still moving over it. "He or she is gonna be unique. With a strong beautiful name. Not with the burden of ours."
"You're a strong and beautiful woman." Stopping at a red light he stared at her pretty profile. "I love you."
"I love you, too." Kristen whispered back at him, her green eyes meeting his ocean blue ones.
After spending all morning shopping for the playroom, Rob started to build every furnitures and hang pictures in the room. All of that following Kristen's instructions, but he still tried to add his touch. But decorating definitely wasn't his thing. He didn't mind though, he was jetlagged but happy to bring life to something his child will use.
Early evening Kristen strolled into the room where Rob was still working on. She watched him pushing an armchair around the room until he found the right place. Then he took some stuff animals from a bag and placed them too before crossing his arms and looking around the room, totally proud of himself.
"Happy, future daddy?" Rob was startled by Kristen's voice, he thought she was still napping. "I like what you're making the room into. It's comfy."
She stepped into the room. Seeing everything they chose together in there made her heart beat faster. This was everything she desired, thanks to her boyfriend.
"Really? You like it? It's not done yet but-"
He was rambling because of his insecurity to make her happy."I do." She got closer to him and cuddled herself onto his side. "I can't wait to see the baby here."
They stayed still in the middle of the room, for a few minutes, imagining what the future would be. Rob sighed happily and kissed the top of Kristen's head.
"Your mom called." Kristen said. "They're arriving on Saturday. And your sisters will be here probably a few days before the due date."
"Oh. Okay."
"Nettie's coming too." Her voice was a whisper with how comfortable she was in his arms.
"Why?"
"For the pregnancy shoot." Kristen reminded him.
She was doing it late because he hadn't been there. They still had a lot of things to do, even with how much she did for the last two months. And the days before the little one arrives will go by way too quickly. Rob hummed as an answer.
Later that night Kristen was sitting on their bed, lotioning her belly, with Rob looking at her from the bathroom brushing his teeth. The gesture she was doing on her skin was mesmerising, and he still couldn't believe how much her belly grew in two months. When she was doing that and softly singing, if he concentrated enough he could see the baby's kick extending her skin. No matter how much he saw that happening, he was still mesmerised by it.
Kristen closed the lid of her lotion and put it in the drawer of her night table, then she laid down on the bed, still letting her belly uncovered, and closed her eyes.
Rob grabbed his phone from the bathroom counter and discreetly took a picture of her. She looked so peaceful, pregnancy definitely suited her.
