Chapter One: Strange Sounds

There it is again. The sounds that bounces of the walls like a gentle whisper. Lucy can't describe the sound. It is too faint; too strange. Throwing the warm sheets away from her legs, Lucy leaves her room, tiptoeing down the hall towards the grand staircase leading to the foyer.

The almost barren mansion echoes and creaks around her, strong wind attempting to bend the century old structure with its force. The empty halls and blank walls give Lucy the impression that this estate has not been lived in for a very long time. Despite the darkness of the night surrounding her, she can still see the dust floating through the air, dancing like glitter in the moonlight.

Using the wall to guide her to the railing, Lucy moves to take the stairs slowly, as her eyes continue to adjust to the swallowing darkness. The hard, aged carpet beneath her feet suddenly becomes cold marble. The abrupt iciness sends tremors through her sparsely clothed body. Lucy still hasn't gotten used to the Wyoming's cold temperatures. It is very different from Florida's balmy mornings.

Ignoring the cold sensation, Lucy continues her descent, her hand gripping the wooden railing tightly. She pauses abruptly when she hears the strange sound once more. From her bed she could hear the mere humming of the noise; now it is louder. It is still hushed, barely audible, and she still can't identify the sound. It sounds like something is scraping. Where the hell is it coming from? She continues her way down, following the sound into the desolate foyer.

Then it stops again. Standing on the final step, Lucy squints her eyes trying to identify what could have been making the noise that has disturbed her sleep every night since she moved in with her father. But she finds nothing out of the ordinary. Waiting for a moment more, Lucy decides to grab a glass of water, to clear her head. Traipsing into the large kitchen, Lucy makes her way across the room, grabbing one of the two glasses in the top cupboard. Filling it with chilled water from the refrigerator. Lucy shivers as the cold water blossoms goosebumps across her expose skin. After finishing the glass, she moves to refill it.

Then she hears the strange noise again.

Spilling the water over the counter, Lucy hisses "Shit." Reaching across the island to the sink, she grabs a cloth and wipes up the puddle quickly. Hurriedly returning the water to its home in the refrigerator, she abandons her half-full glass in the sink to follow sound back to the foyer.

The sound is haunting, unsettling her nerves as she traces it back to the door beneath the staircase. In the three weeks that Lucy has been living with her father, she hasn't once opened that door. She had been ordered not too. It was among her father's few rules.

"I don't care what you do with your time, whether you go to school or get a job. I only have three rules if you are going to be living here."

Wow.

"You are not allowed to be in the mansion by yourself at any time. Therefore, between two and seven, you need to find another place to be, as I will be out of the house at between these times every day."

Wow. So trusting...

"You are not permitted to have any friends over-"

Awesome. There does any potential for a normal social life.

"And that door over there," Jude, Lucy's estranged father, points to the ordinary white door hidden beneath the grand staircase. "That door leads to the basement. I use that as my work lab. You are not welcome past that door."

Jude's dark gaze had vanquished any curiosity that Lucy harboured at the time. She had wondered why Jude would be so concerned with a old, damp basement – if it is in any condition similar to the rest of the mansion, Lucy could only imagine how grimy and dust it would be. And cold.

It would be so cold.

But the strange sounds seem to be coming from behind that door. It comes and goes, the longer Lucy waits. Her curiosity continues to mount, her hand slowly inching closer to the handle. A mere moment before her fingers could touch the brass, does she jerk back at the sound of an unexpected voice.

"Have you forgotten my rule already?"

Leaping back from the door, Lucy's eyes find her fathers hard stare. Even in the darkness, she knows she is angry, simply from the heat of his glare.

"Sorry," she quickly stutters, "I just... heard a strange noise when I was sleeping, and it woke me up."

Jude continues down the stairs towards his recently rediscover daughter. The noise had woken him as well. He had been on his way to dealing with it when he found Lucy on the verge of opening the door. He realises now that he will need to install a lock on the door, in case he doesn't catch her the next time she tried to defy his rules.

If she is anything like Layla, she will be trouble. To curious for her own good.

"Go back to bed. I will look into the noises." Lucy nods her head with a sigh, before she moves to where Jude stands at the bottom of the stairs. As she takes the steps slowly, she hears the sound again.

The two of them turn their heads in the direction of the basement door. The sound doesn't last long, only a couple of seconds. Jude grits his teeth.

"What is that sound?" Lucy asks, pausing halfway up the stairs. Jude turns his head in her direction, but doesn't turn completely to look at her, "Just a family of possums, I suppose. This estate is very old."

Ashley nods her head, a frown furrowing her brows. "Alright. Good night Jude." It makes Lucy a lot more comfortable to call him Jude instead of 'dad'. Jude nods his head, waiting for Lucy's bedroom door to click before moving towards the basement door.

"Damn nuisance."

As Lucy lies back down in her small bed, she thinks about her mother. She thinks about her calming voice, and her long brilliant blonde hair, and her dazzling brown eyes.

Layla had always told Lucy that she had a father, but that he was a bad man, who did bad things. That's why she took Lucy away. But she also didn't plan on being rundown by a car. So here Lucy is, back with her "bad man" father.

It's only been one month without you, mom. If feels like a lifetime.

Tucking herself back under the blankets, hoping to regain the warmth she had left behind.

First day at school tomorrow. I wonder how different these people are from my friends back in Era.

With her thoughts consumed by tomorrow's possibilities, Lucy falls back into her peaceful slumber, this time no sounds bouncing off the walls to disturb her.
