CHAPTER 49

She was still pressed against me as sunlight streamed in through the stained window of the inn. My wing still covering her body, shielding her from the cold.

Memories of last night play with my mind as my arm further covers her, pulling her closer and closer.

I only wanted her closer to me.

She twist in my arms turning around to face me and I feel my jaw clench. My eyes open as she nestled her head in my arm still sheltered by my wing.

And at that moment I realized I wanted this to last forever. I don't want to leave this, we hadn't had any if this before and this was what I wanted.

 I wanted her.

Her voice startles me when she says, "Why did you make that bargain with me? Why demand a week from me every month."

And I look into her eyes, soft with dancing curiosity.

And so I say, "Because I wanted to make a statement to Amaratha; because I wanted to piss off Tamlin, and I needed to keep you alive in a way that I wouldn't be seen as merciful."

Her eyes meet mine and she says, "Oh."

My mouth tightens and I say, "You know--you know there is nothing I wouldn't do for my people, for my family."

She looks away and a minute of silence passes between us.

I fold my wig back and take in the morning light shining through.

"Bath or no bath?" I ask her as she sits up.

"I'd rather bathe in a stream," she says, running a hand through her hair.

I let out a low laugh at her words as I roll out of the bed. "Then let's get out of here."

Her smile falters and a part of me cringes at it, seeing it fade sends a sick feeling through me I wish I could tear away.

We flew most of the day, going farther than we ever had before. Leaving frosted trees to snow capped Illyrian Mountains. She barely says a word to me as we go from place to place, making me wonder if she wants to forget everything that happened last night between us. Something I wish I could tell her was something i was glad that happened.

A clearing shows itself a minute later and I can tell she's disappointed by another day of working on her powers but I want her to be able to utilize them and if that means we take a step back, it's something I'm willing to risk.

Hours had passed and I watched her with such intensity I'm surprised she didn't catch fire.

Every now and then I would catch her looking at me every time she stopped for a rest. But still she doesn't even talk to me, and I open my mouth like an idiot ready to say something but on my close it for silence to further itself between us.
