Go, run. Chase the girls with wrist tattoos down
By the river bed like every Sunday turns into.
Leave the water faucet on so that when you come back
You can wash ruby red lip stick off of the plates.
Terracota and ceramic collarbones that break
Under pressure just before the summer storms arrive.
You kissed the girl beneath the willow tree that night,
Just before your mom rolled over onto the floorboards
Again. You promised
Stability. But you wouldn't have known stability even if
It loved you wide awake. You grabbed candles from the
Kitchen counter and lit them beneath her because maybe
It would keep her warm when you couldn't, but
Flames scald like the boiling water your parents are fighting over.
Bathroom mirrors and laced frosty window sills, lift your
Sister up so she can see over the fostered soil. How
Can you provide safekeeping for something you've never held
Celestial light slips through the curtains behind the telephone
Bills. The stars warm the space, misty orbits distract us from
Whenever tomorrow would decide to show up again. I can
Taste the starlight, but I give it to her first. She smiles, her
Lips upturn at the sound of my voice
As her eyes catch the ethereal glow of the moonlit night.
There was never anything more beautiful and bittersweet,
I thought as the sun stole its way into the morning again.
