Chapter 3

As Ryan and I walked into the movie theater, he asked me what movie I wanted to see. But, honestly, I didn't really focus on the movie. The car ride was so quiet. We didn't even say a word to each other. I mean, he did say "Come on!" when he was getting in the car, does that count?

"Anything specific you wanna see?" Ryan asked me.

"Uh, how about an action movie?"

"Oh, um..sure. Which one?"

"How about..."

"Aw man!"

"What?!"

"They just shut down the theater!"

"Why?"

"Hold on," He quickly walked over, talked to the man, and walked back. "Some kid had an accident in the one theater they have available."

"Oh," I didn't know what to say. "Maybe we could go somewhere else."

"You up for pizza?"

"Yea, sure."

We walked down the boardwalk to the pizza parlor.

"After you," he said as he opened the door. "You know, ladies first."

I glared at him. "Since when does me being a girl have anything to do with me going first?"

"What do you mean?"

"When we were little, did you ever wait for me, or let me go first?" I couldn't help but blush.

"Um...No."

So then he blushed. "Don't worry about it, I'm just teasing." I assured him.

A sigh of relief escaped him. "Lets go in." He pulled me along with his hand locked in mine.

After we walked in, with a moment of regret, our hands fell limply to our sides.

"How can I help you today?" An older woman, named Wanda (what? that's what the name tag said!) asked.

"Uh...table for two?" Ryan muttered.

"Would you like a booth?" Ryan didn't answer, so I did.

"Yes please."

"Okay, follow me," the woman named Wanda urged.

We had settled into the booth, and then the woman asked us if we would like anything to drink.

"Can I have a water?" I didn't like caffeine much.

"I'll just have a sweet tea." Ryan insisted.

"I'll be right back with your drinks." The woman scurried away.

"So, how are you Chayna?"

"Oh, uh.." How was I? "I'm fine. This is nice, really."

"I'm glad you liked it. I was upset that they closed the theater, though."

"That's okay, I'm sure the movies weren't even that good." Gosh. I had butterflies in my stomach.

"Yea...so do you have your "pair" yet?"

"Oh, uh Fintan? Yes, I guess so. Do you?" I couldn't help but ask.

"Um..." He seemed uncomfortable. I didn't want Ryan to feel uncomfortable with me. Is that selfish?

"You don't have to tell me or talk about it or whatever. I shouldn't have asked-"

"No! I don't mind the questioning." He smirked. "I-just don't really think that this "pairing" thing is a good idea. I mean I know it's been going on for centuries, but-"

"What?!"

"What?" He seemed to shrink down real small.

"I'm sorry." I felt guilty the second I said it. "I just haven't heard such an independent thought before."

"Independent thought. Wow. Didn't look at it like that. Well, that's what I think. Do you have a problem with me now?" He threw is words at me like knives. And the words hurt almost as much as the knives would've.

His anger seemed to become strongest at that point.

"No." I whispered quietly.

"I'm sorry Chayna. I really...gosh. I don't know what came over me."

"Okay." I felt...hurt.

"Please don't do this."

I just sat there.

"Come on Chayna. Talk to me."

I just sat there.

"Chayna?"

I felt..woozy. I was swinging and swinging back and fourth. Like on a swing. I like swings. I thought to myself. Like the one at my grandparents home. I was, I was...falling?

"CHAYNA!"

I felt myself go limp and crash on the hard, cold, linoleum floor. This is too much pressure. I thought, before feeling my eyelids close.
