The girl and the father have NEVER talked in person before the only form of communication that they have is through letters and pictures.
The father could be in the army or apart of the FBI or something reasonable where they cannot talk to each other.
The parents are still married, and they love each other very very much, but he just cannot talk to them.
Then when maybe the girl is like forty, and her mom is dead, they could finally meet and he's sick or something. So her first impression of him, his voice and his looks, is him dying and all
This would be more of a coming of age story, but you could put a little romance In there;). Maybe a guy who has been in love with her throughout the whole book, and they grow up together and get married. I imagine it going through her whole life; when she's a kid and a teen and when she gets married an all of the things she's missed without having her dad there.
