Chapter Seventeen: Undying

A flash of light fills the bridge. Sam looks up and sees a monster in front of them. It is Undyne, the fish lady warrior. She jumped in front of Monster Kid and took the blow. Her torso plot in two as a expression of shock fills her face. Monster Kid holds back tears.

"Undyne.. you're hurt."

"Hurt? Its nothing. Next time, listen when I tell you to leave, okay?"

"Undyne..."

"I'll take care of this! Get out of here!"

Monster Kid scurries off to safety with his head hanging low. Undyne looks down as her feet start to blur and fade. She is dying.

"Ha... it's nothing. No.. s-somehow, with just one hit... I'm already... damn it."

The top half of Undyne slips a little and she's completely lopsided. She's breaking apart. Her legs are begining to blur and fade as well.

"Papyrus... Alphys... ASGORE. Just like that, I... I've failed you."

Undynes entire body fades and blurs. Sam awaits her to dissolve and turn into dust. But it never came. The fading stops and her shoulders to back into place. She isn't lopsided anymore. Her voice changes into a tone of disbelief.

"No. My body... it feels like it's splitting apart. Like any instant... I'll shatter into a million pieces. But.....deep in my soul. There's a burning feeling I can't describe. A burning feeling that won't let me die. This isn't about monsters anymore, is it? If you get past me, you'll destroy them all. Wont you? Monsters... humans... everyone. Everyone's hopes. Everyone's dreams. Vanquished in an instant. But I won't let you do that. Right now, everyone in the world... I can feel their hearts beating as one."

Undyne looks Sam straight in the eyes. They each glare at each other. The fight buttons glow deeply. Undyne's words get shaky as a grin emerges on her face.

"We all have one goal. To defeat you! Human. No, whatever you are. For the sake of the whole world. I, Undyne, will strike you down!"

Undynes entire body fades into a ray of light. She emerges in a whole new set of battle armour. With a massive heart in the center, she is reborn. Sam's soul gets ready as a battle begins.

"You're gonna have to try a little harder than that!"

Sam's soul turns green and a shield appears in front of them. What magic is this? They look in front of them and face Undyne the Undying. Light reflects off her left eye as she holds a spear steady in her right hand. Sam pushes the fight button and attacks.

Sam does a massive amount of damage as they scream a battle cry. The whisper in their head is yelling at them to kill her. Kill her. Kill her!

Undyne counter attacks with spears raining down from all directions. Sam uses their bright green shield to deflect and defend themselves. The wind is howling as the battle carries on.

The spears get faster and Sam takes a few blows to the back. They feel their health drop as the pain fills them. But they are still alive. Undyne swings her spear and Sam's soul turns red again.

Sam strikes back at Undyne but her armour absorbs most of the damage. A counter attack emerges, and without the green soul shield Sam is forced to run and Dodge. Spears coming from all angles stabbing at Sam nonstop.

Undyne swings her spear again and Sam's soul turns green once more. The shield returns and the battle continues this way. The shield is no match for the super fast spears though. Blocking one but leaving the other side open, Sam gets hit with multiple attacks.

Sam's eyes grow wide as they look down. A spear has gone right through them. Their soul falls to the floor and breaks into two. Their eyes close as their vision fades away. They drop to the floor and seep into darkness.

*Game Over.

Thier eyes open and they find themselves hovering in the darkness. An echo of a memory that isn't quite theirs fill the room.

"You cannot give up just yet. Chara! Stay determined...."

Who is Chara, and why does the name make them shiver so? A killer headache emerges as they remember the pain of dying. Is this what happens when you die? Nothingness?

Suddenly, two buttons appear in front of Sam. Continue, and reset. A choice of sorts. Sam slowly pushes the one labelled "continue" and the darkness begins to glow. A massive light engulfs them and blinds their vision. Until suddenly, they lose consciousness.

Sam awakens in front of their last save point. The one right before the little wooden bridge where they fought Undyne. They stare down at their hands. They're.... alive?

Save points must have the power to ressurect Sam! This is the power of the "Determination" the power to never die! The power to control time and space in the Underground.

Sam walks back to the bridge and begins to cross. Monster Kid runs up to them and the entire event repeats itself. Sam has gone back in time! Undyne jumping in front of Monster Kid. Undyne turning into a super strong warrior. Everything repeated itself.

Sam has unlimited chances at life.

The battle begins again and Sam is ready. They defend against the spears. They fight back with full force. They even use the ITEM button to eat some food. Time and time again Sam dies at Undynes unstoppable spears. Until eventually, they beat her.

With blood all over and their health dangerously low Sam staggers to their feet. Undyne shakes and tries to hang onto life.

"Damn it... so even that power. It wasn't... enough? Heh... if you think I'm gonna give up hope, you're wrong. Because I've... got my friends behind me. Alphys told me that she would watch me fight you. If anything went wrong... she would evacuate everyone. By now she's called Asgore and told him to absorb the six human souls."

Undyne literally begins to melt. She cannot hold on much longer.

"With that power... this world will live on!"

Undyne breaks into a million pieces as the battle ends. Sam walks to the end of the Waterfall area and saves. A million questions fill their mind as they walk onto the next area.

Who is Alphys, and how was she watching them? Who is Chara? Did the Monster king absorb the six souls already? Sam walks past a massive neon sign as they spot an exit to this cave. They begin to sweat as heat fills the area. Their sweater isn't much help here.

They notice a ocean of lava underneath than as they look ahead. A huge metal lab looms above them. The neon sign they passed may have been off, but the words are easy to make out. Welcome to Hotlands.
