CHAPTER XVII
FATE !

SHE PEAKED HER HEAD THROUGH THE CRACK
of her hospital room door, looking around for any nurses. She sprints out of the room when seeing the coast was clear, her heart beating wildly. Patty approaches Johnny's room quietly turning the doorknob and walking inside to see a small light.

"Johnny," She whispers, "Are you awake?"

Johnny doesn't reply, she notices they moved him to an actual hospital bed, where he lay flat on his back.

"Patty?" He asks, looking over at her.

"I couldn't sleep," She responds, "I hate hospitals."

Johnny nods slowly and she takes a seat in the chair beside his bed. "You'll be okay, you know that, right?" Johnny doesn't respond. "When they let you out of here, we'll visit places! Wherever you want."

"Yeah," Johnny replies. "Patty, I don't think I'll-"

She cuts him off, "Don't, please Johnny."

"Maybe it was already planned but when I ran into that church it took a turn and came quicker than we thought. I killed Bob so I'm-"

"Johnny, fate ain't real."

"It brought me you, didn't it?" Johnny asks.

"You don't think that was fate-"

"It was fate for you to invite me to that party, from there we would've never gotten together. It was destined for the teacher to make us partners-" He stops and takes a deep breath and she watches as his breathing slows.

"Hey Johnny, you okay?"

"Yeah," He replies and Patty gently reaches out and touches his scarred hand.

Dally stumbles into the room, startling the couple, Ponyboy following soon after, "We beat the Socs, man. Chased them right out of our neighborhood."

"It's useless," Johnny tells him, "Fighting ain't no good."

"They're still writing editorials in the papers about you being a hero," Dally tells him, "We are all proud of you. It's gonna be all right."

Ponyboy leans closer to Johnny as he tries to tell him something, "Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold."

"Johnny, come on," She whispers, wiping at her eyes trying to keep herself from crying.

"So, this is what you get for helping people?" Dally speaks up, "You punk! Come on, Johnny, don't die. Come on, don't die on me now. Please!"

She watches as Dally stumbles to his feet and leans against the doorframe. "Bastards!" He leaves and Ponyboy stares at Patty, small tears running down both of their faces.

"Johnny," She whispers, but Ponyboy holds onto her, helping her out of the room. "No."

"Patty, come on," Ponyboy says and Patty frantically shakes her head.

"No, no, no."

"Sir," A nurse says.

"I found her in the hospital room," Ponyboy responds and the nurse takes the shaking Patty from him.

"He's-he's-"

"Ma'am, I need you to calm down and walk with me."

"Johnny-my Johnny, he's-" Patty attempts again but she stumbles over her words. The nurses forces Patty to lie back down. "You let him die!"

"We didn't-"

"You didn't try to help him!" She cries, "What's the point!"

"Ma'am, please keep your voice down," The nurse says soothingly but Patty ignores her, continuing to stutter and ramble.
