Chapter 14
I was currently meditating, trying to get my mind off the appalling news about my previous family. After our talk, we just continued training for the next few hours. It was the middle of the night now, I'd say around midnight to one. I was currently using a meditation spell Daren taught me; it allows me to heighten my senses to the best of their ability to find and pinpoint activity going on around me at least twenty roots out.
My ears are my eyes, and the soil beneath me become my atlas on the entire area of my territory. The vibrations of every little creature, the footsteps of every person in the town ahead of me, I can see it all from my ears, and estimate the distance of where they are through the ground.
Daren's job was to try and find me, hidden amongst the forest, and capture me to bring back as a hostage. My job was to pinpoint his location, and stop that from happening.
I was hidden in a thick bush behind some trees near a pond. My mind was still clouded with raging thoughts, but I tried my best to tune them out as I located Daren hidden in the trees above about a root away. I readied some Paralyzing Needle Missiles and shot them his way.
He dodged them, and went farther away from my position. I knew that would buy me some time, so my mind went back to the information given to me earlier.
I can't believe the people I've been living with all my life have killed people in the past. I figured they were pretty heartless people, but I would have never come up with the conclusion of murder.
Then I thought of something terrible that might happen.
Would they train little Akoni into being a killer too?
My thoughts were interrupted by a large force tackling me out of my hiding place. We both tumbled over and landed in a shallow part of the pond.
I sat up quick as lightning, and looked at my attacker. It was just Daren, although he looked kind of silly being soaked in water.
I lowered my heart-rate and went back to thinking about my poor little brother possibly become a blood-thirsty killer. The thought made me nauseous, and my head started to feel unbalanced.
"Hey, Zeera, let's get back. I think you've had enough for today." Daren said, standing up from the water and offering a hand up.
I nodded and took his hand, but didn't say anything. Once I stood up, and we both walked out of the pond, I snapped my fingers, and we were both instantly dry.
"Thanks." He said. I hummed in response and headed back towards the tunnel of the Sanctuary.
Half of the walk there was quiet until Daren got fed up with my sulking.
He sighed and said, "Zeera, I'm sorry about your family, but you can't let this affect your training. Me and you are the only hope for this world, so you can't let something like this to bring you down."
That just made me sulk even further. Note to self, peer pressure just makes things worse.
He groaned. "That's not how I wanted that to come out."
I knew what he was trying to say, but the inner, curious part of me wanted to see how this was going to play out.
He grabbed onto my shoulder, halting us both from walking, and turned me around to face him.
"Zeera, I'm so sorry about your family." Then he pulled me into a hug, shocking me stiff. "I wouldn't have told you so soon if I knew it would hurt you this bad. But I promise, once this is all over, we'll confront your family on everything."
