Chapter 6

"Zeera! You're okay!" I heard Desta shout as she tackled me into a hug. I grasped onto the door frame with one hand to keep steady and the other to hug her back.

I laughed, "Yes, I'm fine Desta. Thanks for worrying."

She gasped and leaned back, not letting go of my shoulders. "You're laughing! You're smiling! You rarely ever smile and laugh! What did Kulea do to make you this happy?"

I felt my face burn and the hair behind my neck prickle as I barely stuttered out a response to her.

She shook her head. "Never mind what she did, I'm just glad you're ok. Come on, I have your present in my room, let's go get it!"

She grabbed my wrist and half dragged, half ran me across the sanctuary to get to her room. By the time we got there, my head was spinning, and my entire body felt like the after effects of imitating the blades of a blender.

"Hey Yanju, Zeera's feeling a whole lot better now! Let's give her our presents."

I shook my head a little and focused my sight to find Yanju laying on his bed with some earbuds on, listening to something on his phone. He glanced over here once, but that's all.

Then, not surprisingly, Desta shouted his name and ran over to him. She belly-flopped on his back with an oof, but Yanju still had no reaction.

"Why don't you read your poem out loud first?" Yanju suggested to Desta. Did he say poem? Did Desta write a poem for me?

Desta gasped as she jumped off him and punched his back.

"No! We agreed that you would give yours first and I read mine to her after!"

Yanju pushed himself off the bed and stalked towards the door. He seemed to have no expression on his face, but I could swear I saw a hint of mischief in it.

"Change of plans, left mine in one of the classrooms. Guess you'll have to read yours first. See you later." And before any protest would arise, the door closed behind him.

Desta's face contorted into anger, but she turned back towards me and took a few deep breaths.

"Ok, I can do this. I can do this. It's for Zeera, I've practiced this..." I thought I heard her mumble.

"Um, everything okay?" I softly ask, extremely unsure if I should have spoken up until now.

She seemed to jump at my voice, as if she forgot I was here as she rummaged through her drawers in search of something. Probably this poem I keep hearing about.

"O-oh! No-I-I mean, yes! Yes, everything is fine. Just... Just uh, you can sit on the bed if you want. I uh, I'm just getting... everything... ready..." She mumbled off as she continued her search. I slowly made my way to the bed and flopped down, putting the two presents I had beside me. I was a bit excited and nervous at what was going to happen.

"Found it! Okay," She cleared her throat and turned to me.

"I know you like to read, and it's really hard getting a gina a present," This statement aggravated me a bit, but I said nothing. "and so, after a good month of banging my head against the wall, I finally thought of writing you a poem for your Dawning present! Wow, that kinda sounds lame out loud, but I hope you like it!" She cleared her throat again, and I smiled brightly.
