//"Don't look down," I commanded myself as the distance between my feet and the ground grew wider and wider. I surpassed the treetops and aimed for the glowing light in the sky, a flickering flame high out of reach. The air pressure tugged and bucked at my frail lungs, but I kept rising, being drawn in as if the scintillating light were a magnet.
As I drew closer, the light started to take shape, and a wave of realization hit me.
Then I looked down.
Suddenly I was falling, plummeting to Earth like an apocalyptic commet.//The impact jolted me from my dream world. The bed frame was shaking. Had I literally just fallen from the air and onto my bed? That wouldn't be the weirdest thing that's happened.
*knock knock knock*
An impatient fist pounded repeatedly on the door. What is this person's deal? Who is this agitated at - I pulled my phone from beneath my pillow and glanced at the time - 10 in the morning? Oh no. Robin.
The intolerant hammering persisted as I leapt out of bed and began my apology before I even reached the door, knowing good and well the walls here weren't soundproof.
"I'm really sorry Robin! I never oversleep! And thanks for not just-" my throat ceased when I opened the door to a black-leather-jacketed Harry.
"Not just what? Teleporting inside like an ass?" His gaze scoped the area behind me. "This place is a mess anyway. Jesus, what happened in here?" he scoffed.
"Hmm?" I turned around to see that my room looked like a vacuum had sucked up all its contents and spat them back out. Papers, books, and candles we scattered all over the floor, and my stained-glass lamp laid shattered in the corner.
"Oh my gosh, I didn't do this, did I?" I quavered.
"Your powers are newly surfaced, and they're unsteady. I wouldn't doubt you could do a lot more damage when you're actually awake. How do you feel right now?" he cooly questioned, sounding as if he couldn't care less about the answer.
"Like zero percent of me is capable of doing anything like this. In fact, one hundred percent of me is incapable of doing anything other than studying for the LSAT."
"Look around. Look at that horrid broken lamp. Zero percent of me believes that."
"My grandmother made me that lamp," I barely audibly muttered.
I shook my head at his deadpan and spoke with more purpose, "I'm sorry I was late, but what exactly do you guys have scheduled for me anyway?"
Harry took two fingers and tilted my chin upward to meet his gaze. He studied my face and observed, "Your eye color's a bit darker than yesterday, but it still looks unnatural. Dr. Rem is going to want to check that out. And Louis wants to decipher your abilities. Though it looks to me like you're telekinetic."
Never have I been so speechless. But still, I breathed, "Isn't that lovely."
He raised a dark eyebrow and suggested, "How about you get ready while I pick this shit up. Don't keep me waiting."
"As you wish," I agreed with a mockingly innocent smile. I know I inconvenienced him and it was nice of him to offer to clean up, but he didn't have to be, well, an ass.
---
Fifteen minutes later, I emerged from the bathroom with some light makeup and my usual long wavy hair draped down my back. I had no idea what to expect from this whole escapade, so I wore a pair of black nike leggings with matching black tennis shoes. I pulled on my fitted pink pullover and applied a little extra blush in the hopes of drowning out my rose-colored irises.
The room was spotless. He even made my bed.
"Wow, you do impeccable work, " I playfully grinned, but as expected, his face remained stoic.
"I do what I can. Let's go."
"Alright." I went to my closet and reached for a coat.
"Don't need that," he mentioned as he sailed out the door.
Confusion danced on my features, but I returned my coat back to its hanger, grabbed my keys, and followed him out.
He glided down the extensive hall, while I was nearly in a jog to keep up behind him. At the elevator, I realized something went missing in the haste.
"Oh wait, I forgot my phone," I breathlessly announced.
Not breaking eye contact with the closing elevator door, he raised a vast hand and wiggled my phone between his middle finger and thumb.
I opened my mouth to comment, but pressed my lips into a thin line instead. Robin may have been wildly too forward, but at least he wasn't cryptic. And possibly a klepto.
"Robin was supposed to come, right?"
"You're unhappy with your chauffeur, princess? I'd be happy to fly you there and roast you alive in the process."
"Oh no, you've been an absolute joy. I wouldn't change it for the world."
Because of his lack of expression, I couldn't tell how my return of sour sarcasm had affected him. At least it wasn't making him angry. Progress, I suppose.
"Really though, thank you for cleaning up my room. I appreciate that a lot. You didn't have to do it."
"I know."
The elevator stopped on the second floor, and a girl who looked about my age, 19, walked in with a rolling cart stacked with luggage. From her ruby, swollen eyes, she'd clearly just been crying. This girl probably flunked out and had to move back home.
Willowhaven is a prestigious university, and a hefty amount of people can't cut it. But that didn't make this situation any less awkward.
Harry and I were crowded into the corner, his size looming over me in an attempt to hide my irises. His body heat was making the air uncomfortably warm, so I unzipped my quarter-zip pullover as far as it would go, revealing a subtle hint of cleavage. I fanned myself with the collar of my shirt and craned my neck upward, only to notice that Harry had been staring down at me.
His eyes loitered over me for a moment, but as soon as the elevator reached the lobby, he was out in an instant.
Outside, his motorcycle was parked on the sidewalk - illegally, for that matter. Sitting on the seat were two helmets and a small black leather jacket, similar to Harry's.
"Is that for me? A little grunge, don't you think?" I chuckled.
"Road rash is a nasty bitch."
"I'm sure she is. So I take it you've met her?"
"Met her, fucked her, left her-"
"Geez, we're still talking about road rash, right?"
"-And now I use protection." He smirked while patting his leather jacket.
He paused as he realized, "You haven't eaten anything. We'll stop by the cafeteria before we go to Headquarters. Hop on."
"One more thing...," he lingered, reaching for the Ray Bans that sat atop his chestnut curls.
"Put these on. Be careful with them."
