In my dance studio, we focus allot on facials. When you're telling a story through dance, you have to use your face as much as your body. If it's a sad piece, you can't be wide-eyed and smiley. And if it's a happy piece, you shouldn't look ready to cry.
Our jazz dance is a more mature number, so of course it requires some sassy and suave facials. Lots of half-smiles and arched eyebrows. If I'm going to be honest, it's so much fun to make the audience uncomfortable. By the way, so you can visualize what I'm saying, our song is Feeling Good by Michael Buble.
I read somewhere that during a certain part of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel suggestively winks at whoever is sitting in the front few rows. I've decided to use this sort of technique on stage. Get aaaaall up in the audience's personal space (but, of course, not too much. Gotta be respectful). Hey, we dancers gotta have a laugh sometimes!
Since we are having recitals at a community college instead of the local theatre we usually use, the stage is a lot bigger and the auditorium seats a lot more. I probably won't be able to actually see who I'll be winking at, but whyyyyyy not.
