Prologue
“Zeke!”
“Zeke, breakfast,” an elderly voice was calling to a young boy that was upstairs.
“Coming Grandpa!” a young boy yelled as he pulled on his sock and went racing out the bedroom door towards the steps leading to a delicious aroma.
“Morning Zeke and no running in the house you’ll get hurt,” an elderly lady told Zeke from living room where she was knitting.
“Morning Gran, and sorry, got get to the pancakes before grandpa eats them all,” he said really fast while still running. His grandma shook her head in a playful manner and thought how much she is going to miss her grandson coming here every weekend.
Zeke made it just in the nick of time to grab the last two pancakes before his grandpa got it.
“Hah, I won!” he gleefully yelled out.
“You most certainly did,” Zeke’s grandpa said and ruffled his hair, “are you excited about the big move?”
“Yeah and no,” Zeke said through a mouth full of pancakes.
“Swallow before talking and why not? You should be, a new house, you can make new friends and be bigger city,” his grandpa was trying to comfort the young boy and reassured him that he was going to be ok.
“Well because then I won’t be able to be with you and grandma,” was his simple reply. The elderly man became sad, but covered it up before his grandson saw the sad look upon his face.
“That’s just silly little one, we will always be with you no matter what,” his grandpa sighed and waited for Zeke to finish eating. Once he was done he got up and put the dirty dishes in the sink.
“What shall we do while we wait for your mom?”
“Um......,” Zeke was doing the Winnie the Pooh thinking style to figure out what they should before he leaves.
“Oooo I know I know I know,” his grandma came in all excited about her idea.
“What?” they both reposed unison.
“Hide and Seek,” she clapped her hands. They weren’t exactly old, but not young either. They were up for anything to spend time with their grandson.
They played hide and seek for a couple of hours and that’s when Zeke’s grandma looked at the clock in the kitchen and saw that Zeke’s mother was two hours late picking up Zeke. She was hiding in the pantry. It was big enough for her. Zeke was the seeker. She came out and started to look for her husband to tell him about Karen being late.
“1, 2, 3 on grandma,” Zeke shouted, “now you have to help me find grandpa.”
“Aaron can you come out from you hiding spot,” from the worry he heard in his wife’s voice he came walking out from his hiding spot and made his way down stairs. Aaron wasn’t the only the only one to hear the worry in her voice, Zeke had heard it too.
“What’s the matter grandma?” Zeke looked up at her. She tried smiling, but failed. Just as her husband was descending the stairs, there was a knock at the door.
“MOMMY IS HERE!” Zeke went running towards the door while smiling, but once he opened the door his smile faded complete off his face. His grandparents came up from behind thinking it was Karen, Zeke’s mother, only to find two men in police uniforms standing there with sad and sympathy written on their faces.
“Mr. and Mrs. Nolan?” one on the right asked.
“Yes” they held hands hoping against hope that what they were about to hear wasn’t bad news.
“May we come in, please?” the same cop asked. Zeke who was standing off to the side now was wondering what was happening. But deep down he had a feeling of what’s happening. He just chose to ignore the truth that was about to come out.
