Everything happened fast within the next minutes.
With great caution and a lot more of curiosity, Jiyo and Tablo went straight to the bridge after they collected their shits together. Everyone noticed the two because they were the only ones who broke free from their frozen positions. Everybody else remained stoned in their places, with only the loud beating of their hearts, deep breaths and the distant rush of water down the cliff filling their ears.
Jiyo draws a knife out of her back pocket as she close the gap between her and the metal drape. Beyond that curtain, just a meter away, still stood the motionless corpses. Sixty one, she counted now that she got near, remains. None of them seemingly cares for the frantic gush of water below nor the creaking of the metal barricade in front of them.
All sixty one of them just stood there.
Frozen.
As if waiting.
"Oh dear," she heared Tablo whisper. "Don't tell me that they are all irregulars to begin with?"
"I think that's the case." Jiyo whispered back.
Tablo scoffs. "How lucky are we, no?"
Very?
Not at all if Jiyo may be honest.
"Anong gagawin natin?" Muling pagtatanong ni Tablo.
Jiyo faced him. Nakita niya itong may hawak na armas sa parehong kamay. Nobility and a blade. Well equipped to face the unknown.
Despite the turmoil inside her head, Jiyo still managed to pull a smirk. "This is a patrol, remember? Then we will do what we must. Observe and report anything unusual."
The glint went back in her eyes, this time sharper than ever. It reflected as well in Tablo's eyes.
Both of them moved after. Slowly, Jiyo widrew from the bridge, dragging along the men who froze near the drapes, while Tablo climbed above. None of those movements earned a reaction from the corpses.
Nang makalayo, agad na sinenyasan ni Jiyo ang mga kasamahan. They're twenty five in total. More than half of them are long-range fighters and only a few are fine in close combat. She watched them carefully.
"As you can see, those aren't normal zombies." She pointed at the bridge. "If it is what we think it is, then we have sixty one abnormals beyond that barricade. I repeat, sixty one. And if we don't know what they are capable of doing, then we're doomed." Just like the corpses on the other side of the bridge, she received no response.
"Well, I thought you guys have figured that much. We are all doomed from the very beginning anyway." A wicked smile played on Jiyo's lips. "And so, we are going to conduct an experiment." She finished.
"We have two objectives, which are the same thing all over again. And if so, help me above, someone happens to forgot, here are those aims. One, find out what catches their attention and two," she raises another finger, "how to kill them."
Finally, they nodded at her.
"Good." She smiled for a brief second before facing the men she dragged. "Now, first things first. Natapos n'yo ba ang pag-aayos?"
Gulat pa rin ang mga ito nang sumagot. "A-ah. .K-kasi. ."
She sighed and pitied these men. It's scary enough to see those zombies from afar, what more for these people who stared them eye to eye with just a small safe space in between them. They might be frightened out of their wits.
