Chapter 2
I finished jotting down my notes, trying to concentrate on my writing. Sadly my trembling hand wouldn't cooperate, because every time it touched the paper, I'd have scribbles written down instead of words. I gave up on the notes and put them back into my folder, resting my head on the cool surface of the desk.
After a few minutes went by the sweet sound of the bell rang throughout the school; dismissing all the classes. Before everyone finished packing away their equipment, I was already out of the class. I hoisted my bag up my shoulder as I walked down the long hallway. I felt as if my heart would burst out of my chest any second now. I needed to tell them today. I needed to tell Brandon, Katie, especially Dom... I couldn't hide this from them any longer. They would find out eventually.
As I continued to walk down the hall, all the students started to pour out of their classrooms. I looked around, desperately trying to find Katie, Brandon, or Dom. I gave up after a few minutes of searching.
Snaking my way through the sea of students, I found my locker. It was the last in the row and right next to the girl's bathroom. If it was elsewhere I couldn't imagine how I'd be able to find it-- I could barely read words from a short distance now.
I dropped my heavy backpack at my feet, exhausted, and put in the combination for my locker.
This was the thing; my hand had the combination memorized, knowing how many times I had to twist the lock clockwise and where I'd stop. If someone was to ask me "What's your locker combination?", I honestly wouldn't know. My hand memorized it instead of my head. In my opinion, that was a perk. It was one of the few things I didn't have to use my eyesight for.
I pushed the lock up and with a click and the locker opened. I bent and picked my bag from the floor and shoved it into the locker. When I turned, my heart did a little skip when I saw Katie, my best friend, right behind me. I clutched my chest and let out a nervous laugh. "You scared me."
"Oh. Sorry." She said, laughing lightly. Together, we walked down the countless flights of stairs, talking about our classes and our teachers and how glad we were that our midterms were over.
"One step closer to graduating." Katie said, sighing.
We walked into the cafeteria booming with noise so loud I was surprised the walls weren't vibrating.
The cafeteria and the whole 12th grade body held a sense of care-freeness and ease. Everyone was laughing and eating, socializing and going outside to eat lunch. It was a positive and drastic change from just a few months ago, when we all were cramming to get in our assignments, trying to finish writing our college applications and essays for scholarships.
All we had now was to wait. For results on exams, for admission to colleges and universities, to be granted scholarships, and the easiest-- waiting for graduation!
I bought an apple and a turkey sub, along with a bottle of water for lunch. As Katie and I searched for an empty table, I found my eyes scanning around the cafeteria as I waited in line for any sign of Brandon.
He was nowhere to be found.
As we seated I went up to the table Brandon usually sat at. His friends looked up at me as I walked toward them. A few girls sat with them as well, hair curled and straightened, lips colored with lipstick, faces flawless and eyelashes brushed with mascara. Their bodies were perfect, clothes a little too revealing for my taste. Who was I to judge?
"Hey," I said, stopping in front of them.
