Chapter 6

Sunlight shown through the sheer white curtains of my room. I awoke with a long yawn. My eyesight felt a lot dimmer than usual, but a smile still managed to remain on my lips. I couldn’t stop thinking about that kiss…  It refused to leave my mind.

As I swung my legs over to the side of my bed, a familiar aching pain traveled from my legs to my spine. The pain stayed for a few more seconds before leaving. However this pain was no stranger to my body; I always got pains whenever I hadn’t had a good run in my wolf form regularly. When I got up to walk, a flash of blackness replaced my sight like a blindfold. My steps were uncoordinated and shaky. The doctors told me this was common process of going blind, but I still couldn’t help but panic, before I got my eyesight back to its original state.

Eventually, I got to the bathroom. My stomach growled as I quickly did my morning routine. Then I hastily changed into a pair of loose sweatpants, and a tank top for a run afterwards. I rushed down the stairs, towards the mouth watering aroma of chocolate chip pancakes and fresh fruit. Ever since my eyesight weakened, my sense of smell improved supernaturally and became a lot stronger than before.

“Morning!” I said to my mom who hovered over the stove, flipping pancakes. A glass of cool water stood on the table and I chugged it down greedily.

“Good morning. How is your eyesight doing?” Mom asked.

“Got worse when I woke up… The doctor said it’s normal part of the process of going blind… Where’s Dad?”

“He’s at the shop taking care of a last few things. We’ve decided to extend our business into Boston. Your father found the perfect place to set the store up!”

“That’s great. Are the pancakes ready?” I asked eagerly. The delicious scent of pancakes was almost unbearable, I could already taste the chocolate oozing out from the pancake. Mom nodded, and placed a large pancake on my plate. Once I sat down, I drowned the pancake in maple syrup, and devoured it happily. I then drank a glass of orange juice. Us werewolves had to consume a lot of fluids every day, since our body temperatures were naturally high, and since we burn a large amount of calories each day, especially when shifting. After I was done, I thanked my mom for breakfast and told her I was going on a run.

Our family is lucky; the forest is basically our backyard. Some of my werewolf friends have to drive miles, to get to the forest for a proper run in our werewolf forms. As I walked over a bunch of logs, leaves, and rocks in the forest, I couldn’t help but think, about how Dom would come to Boston. It was the beginning of our senior year in high school, the year everyone finds their mates, and the year everyone applies for college and officially become adults.

Now I was deep inside the forest. No sign of civilization in sight, and I quickly stripped out of my clothing, hiding the articles of clothing under a pile of leaves and dirt.

It always drained out most of my energy whenever I’d shift. I would be panting for oxygen, when I was fully shifted, for a few minutes before gaining my regular energy back. I closed my eyes and seconds later, I heard the familiar cracking, and rearranging of my bones, into different areas of my body as I shifted. The first time I ever shifted was the most painful. The pain would stretch itself out for hours and beyond. Now, there was just a little pain in the beginning before numbness would overcome my body. Followed by the obvious; you're a werewolf.

Once I was fully transformed, I walked around for a few minutes to get used to my new body, before sprinting off. I leapt over logs and rocks, dodging trees and other simple obstacles. I have to admit though, I did bump into a few things every now and then, because of my poor eyesight.
