 Chapter 15

That night, I didn’t sleep. So many unanswered questions kept sleep as far away as possible and a pounding headache.

When it was time for school, I was anxious. I threw on a pair of black faded skinny jeans, a light gray and white striped cardigan, and a white tank underneath. I brushed my hair quickly and dashed down the stairs. Breakfast was on the table, but I wasn’t feeling so hungry.

I grabbed my bag from the counter in the kitchen and tried making my way out the door. “Stop.” Mom said. I turned. “You’re eating breakfast before you go.” Her stern tone leaved no room for arguments so I scoffed down a bowl of cereal and a cup of orange juice. When I was done, I was going to rush out the door before Mom threw me a rain coat. I looked at it, confused on to why she’d give it to me.

“It’s raining.” She laughed at my confusion. Peeking out the window and saw that there was a downpour. Now that I paid attention to the weather, I could hear the deep thudding sounds of the rain hitting our roof and front porch. I was probably so lost in my thoughts I hadn’t even waited to listen to the obvious thudding of the rain.

All the way to school, I was fidgeting with my hands. We pulled up to the school in a surprising amount of time considering all that traffic and rain. “Thanks for the ride, Mom.” I said before slamming the door shut and jogging up the path and into the school. Most of the students were in the cafeteria and gym, but some roamed the hallways.

When I walked into the noisy cafeteria, I looked around expectantly for that one person. When I didn’t see Holden, a frown tugged onto my lips. I barely knew him, I only said a few words to him, but there were so many things about him I wanted to know. Like why he was there, in the forest, the day before I left for Boston. And why he was refusing to feel that pull, that connection between us.

“Hey!” Rose chirped and I jumped slightly.

“Whoops, didn’t mean to scare you.” She said, chuckling lightly at my reaction. I yawned and leaned against a wall, closing my eyes that burned from the lack of sleep.

“Wow, you look like crap. You look like… Like Edward Cullen. Did you get any sleep?”

“Gee, thanks.” I said sarcastically, opening my eyes. “I couldn’t sleep all night.”

“That explains it.” Rose said. A few minutes later the bell rang, allowing everyone to go to their homeroom classes.

There was a giant clot of students near all the staircases. There were so many students that it took approximately five to ten minutes for the staircases and hallways to clear up. By the time we got upstairs, almost everyone was in homeroom. The floors were slightly wet from the rain everyone brought in with their shoes. Rose and I were one of the last groups who got to exit the cafeteria last.

At the moment, the hallways just had kids who either rushed to get their things since their homeroom classes were probably on the whole other side of the building, or kids who were simply socializing with friends.
