Chapter Fifteen

Byron's POV

My eyes are instantly drawn to the small figure, dwarfed by Alex and the human officer, Lewis. Her long hair tied up in a messy bun, her captivating green gaze whips around the room wild, like a skittish animal, her heart beat racing, her gaze collides with mine and I see the naked betrayal in the green depths, my heart aches more than I thought it could. Without thinking I go to step away from the far wall but she quickly pulls Lewis infront of her, peeping around his arm as he looks back at her concerned.

"Lara?" Violet's soft voice breaks the silence, the green gaze breaks from mine and I can finally breathe again, my heart feels like it is torn, judging by her reaction to me in the hospital I should have guessed how she would be back in my home. Part of me thought Alex would be able to talk her round, but her wild gaze makes me realise that more damage has been done to her mind than I thought had. The whole room watches in almost fascination as Violet steps silently towards Lara, sparks of life glitter in Lara's gaze as she watches Violet approach, jealousy flares in my veins, I want to be the one that causes Lara's eyes to shine with life. Suddenly Lara launches from behind Lewis, startling us all as she wraps her arms tightly around Violet, burying her face in Violet's vibrant hair, sobs break free from Lara's tight lips as Violet holds her close, lovingly. Violet glances over at me, smiling sadly, knowing that I would give up my life to be in her place right now.

"Im going to take Lewis to his room. Will you be okay for a minute?" Alex's soft voice has Lara glancing around, her green eyes glittering with tears.

"I ... I think so." Lara stutters, I feel helpless at her child like voice. Anger flares, I have no idea what happened to her in Walter's clutches but to know that she thinks I willingly left her there hurts more, my heart feels like its ripped into millions of tiny pieces. I make a promise to myself, when I find out who tortured the beautiful strong woman so badly that she has turned into a shell of herself, I will not show them any mercy, scum dont deserve mercy. Without conscious thought my fist slams into the wall, brick dust plumes up, a growl catches in my throat, hearing a small gasp of shock has me racing from the room, feeling so out of control but I dont want to scare Lara anymore, I dont want to be the monster she now believes I am. Somehow I make it to my room, the rest of the walls intact, my room doesnt fare as well once the door shuts, the dresser flies across the room, smashing to pieces against the wall before I collapse onto the bed, my head in my hands, anger turning to tears.

Days pass in a blur, I havent seen Lara since she arrived but her scent is everywhere, maddening my senses, torturing me with how tantalisingly close she is, yet, so far away. Yasmin still comes to see me, Max at her heel the entire time, I cant fault the man's loyalty and he doesnt hide the worry about Lara at all from me. Violet reports back to me every morning on how Lara is settling in. And whether she wants to or not Violet has a soft spot for Lewis, speaking very fondly of him, I wouldnt be surprised if they got romantically involved soon. I have a begrudging respect for Lewis, I wanted desperately to hate him, but his sense of code and honour did nothing but make me like him. The fact that he threatened to behead me if I harmed Lara should have angered me but it made me respect him more, he is a good man, would be a great vampire if he chose it, I think he and Violet would be well suited together and I will happily give my blessing if they choose it. For hours I lay on the bed, staring at the dull ceiling, unable to come up with a plan to get Lara back, I dont know how to, I dont know what she has been told. Kurt wasnt much help since he was unconscious for most of their entrapment. Voices just outside my door startle my gaze away from the ceiling, looking towards the door, frozen in place as I hear Lara and Lewis arguing.

"Are you sure he is safe?"

"If he wasnt. Wouldnt I be dead already?"
