Emily's POVAfter I walked Randall over to Alison's classroom, I lingered by the door for a few seconds and watched how she interacted with him. It all just came so naturally to her and it made my heart swell at the thought of having our own kids someday.
I left them to run toward the pool area which was crowded with reporters. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked around before I spotted Coach Fulton who waved me over.
"Hey what's going?" I asked the brown skinned woman who threw her hands up in exasperation. "They're asking questions about the Polar Bears."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "The Polar Bears?"
"The team who beat us at nationals last year", She responded while placing her hands on her hips. The woman looked extremely worried and it only increased my own worries.
"Why are they-"
"Supposedly-", Fulton began, cutting me off. "-If we do somehow, magically make it to nationals, we'd have to face off against them again."
"Have they at least earned their spot?" I asked already knowing the answer.
Coach Fulton sighed. "Apparently they don't need to. Not according to the high school swim team administration. The Polar Bears have been undefeated for a couple of years now which means they get a free pass at nationals."
"So that means we have to get the Sharks into really good shape since there's only one spot left", I thought out loud.
"How do you plan on doing that?" The brown skinned woman asked with an arched eyebrow.
"Come on", I said with a smile. "Have a little faith in them."
Coach Fulton looked down at the crystal blue water and shook her head. "I'd hate to say it, but it's the truth. They're not your generation of Sharks. They aren't nearly as good and I'm not sure they'll ever be."
"We can pull this off. I know we can", I told her and I was being completely honest. Sure these kids didn't exactly match up to the former Sharks but they had the potential to be even better.
Coach Fulton sighed as we watched the school officers shove the reporters out. "I'm counting on you to help me out", She said pointing a finger at me.
"Don't worry", I told her before turning to the team who chatted away. "Alright guys! Listen up. I'm sure you're all wondering why those reporters were here."
"Is the school finally getting shut down?" Julie, a girl with blonde hair asked excitedly which made me roll my eyes.
"No", I told her. "They were here because they wanted to get our take on the Polar Bears being entered into nationals."
"Already? That's so not fair", Cynthia shouted out as angry murmur began to break out.
"Guys!" I yelled over them and everyone went silent. "It's not fair, Coach Fulton and I totally agree. But that's the way it is now. They've been undefeated for years now and it's time to change that. You guys can be that change."
"How? We suck ass", One girl said as people began to nod and agree. It kind of stung how much they all didn't believe in themselves.
"You don't suck ass", I said sternly. "You all just need a little booster. This is your booster. A wake up call to get off your lazy asses and actually start putting in some work."
