The trees around her felt like they were caving in as she continued to bend around them as quickly as she could. There were mixtures of trees all around her but she wasn't that focused on them. She was too busy paying attention to the distant footsteps and voices behind her. Alison knew she would probably get caught but she needed to try. She had to try and get away.
After a few more of just running and losing breath, Alison decided to start climbing a tree. It wasn't a huge one or anything but if she got high enough from the ground, the officers would most definately not see her. At least, that was what she hoped. She put one of her feet on a branch and blew out a careful breath when it didn't snap. Alison continued to use a pattern as she climbed up until all the branches were too weak to hold her. She was exhausted and she could hardly see straight.
The footsteps got closer and she knew they were almost there. If they saw her, she'd be finished. She still had a knife in her back pocket but she knew that there was more than four people after her. It would be close to impossible for her to get every single one of them with her knife. Alison could almost smell their desperation to catch her.
"She couldn't have gotten far," one of them huffed out in between breaths. They had been running for a while and they were slowly running out of energy. Alison was too, which was okay since she had just enough to get up the tree. Now, all she could do was pray they didn't look up just to spot the girl on the higher branches of a tree. That was one of the only things that swam in her thoughts as she listened to the officers.
"It's a big forest," one of them said. Alison wasn't sure if it was a girl or a guy who said it. Or maybe it was a man who had a feminine voice. She didn't really care, but she couldn't help but wonder for a few seconds.
"The others are going in other directions," one of then managed to get out. Alison could hear them getting closer but her fear was dying down. She was in a tree, and they were all running around like wild animals, looking for their prey. If only they knew what they were dealing with.
"Stop talking," one of them stage whispered. Alison rolled her eyes before she listened to their heavy breaths. She paid attention to their lighter footsteps as they made their way closer to her. Alison could help but gulp. If she got down from the tree, she would be caught immediately and she would be captured with an easy shot. If she stayed where she was in the tree, they could easily find her since they weren't running anymore. Alison closed her eyes and leaned against the thick bark as she sat on a branch. She focused on her breath and hoped that it would quiet down soon enough. Her feet were sore since she was barefoot. She had taken off her heals after she got close enough to Riley's home. It made it easier for her, but in this case, she regretted not having shoes on, though it'd make the climb to get up the tree harder.
"Can you hear that?" One of them breathed out. Alison immediately pursed her lips together and covered her mouth with her hands to try and quiet herself down. She didn't need support on the branch since she had sat on the tops of trees many times in her childhood. Once or twice it was with Riley, but she stopped doing that when things at home started get weird. She wasn't sure if it was because it was her third foster home, or because she had been going through too much stuff to know what was going on.
"I don't hear footsteps," one of them said quietly. Alison clenched her eyes shut and gulped as silent as she could. It was getting harder and harder for her to stay up there since the breeze was getting stronger. Her nerves were bouncing and no matter what she did, she couldn't calm herself down.
"Check the trees," one of them muttered under their breath. Alison couldn't believe she was going to get caught. She had spent too long and worked too hard to be caught. Slowly, she opened her eyes and counted five officers, two of which holding hand guns. One of them had their taser out, which didn't worry Alison. The other two had free hands, which sent hope to her. If she could lead them away so they separate, she could use her knife on all of them without an issue.
At least, so she thought.
She grabbed a free branch that would've fallen down the tree she was in if she moved too roughly. Alison looked at the cops and tried to balance herself on the branch in her sitting position before she through the branch through the leaves and other twigs before it hit a tree on the other side of the thin path. "What was that?" One of them muttered, looking around with his gun. Alison would've laughed but she had to stay silent in order not to be caught.
"She's in the trees," one of them said before he looked up the tree near where Alison was. She gulped and pressed her back against the thick bark to try hiding herself.
"You two check that side, we'll check this side," the man with the other gun muttered. Alison closed her eyes tightly, realizing that the three of them were on her side. This wasn't going to end well.
"Come down from the trees," one of the men shouted after a few minutes of silence. Alison wanted to bang her head against the bark but held back the urge. She should have just ran and let herself pass out from exhaustion. She had her breath and energy back but that didn't matter now that she was stuck in a tree, surrounded with police men.
"Come out!" One of the other men yelled. Alison smirked under her hands and felt so tempted to throw her knife into one of their throats. It was too bad that it would never work. Reality hit against her; nothing she was planning would work. "Get down from the tree!" The same men yelled. Alison rolled her eyes and shut her eyes tightly afterward.
This wasn't going to end well. Especially since one of the men finally spotted her.
