I thought I was going to cry when I saw the plate in front of me. Steaming hot, fresh pancakes. With butter and syrup and...
"Wow Dip, you are fast." Mabel said.
Breakfast was quiet and awkward. It was clear Stan didn't really know what to think of me. And neither did I. I had run over all the different outcomes of me telling them, but I hadn't ever gotten further than actually telling them. And now... No one really knew the appropriate response to finding out your dead family member is alive and now had a Demon keeping them alive.
"So... What exactly did you do all those months to survive? Do you still need to ... eat and stuff?" Stan asked hesitantly.
"I stayed in your old Bunker, Ford. The one where we found the Shapeshifter. The food was still all there, and the supplies were still good, so I ate that." I said.
"Thirty year old canned beans? No wonder you ate fast." Mabel said, crinkling her nose.
"Yeah." I said.
"Mabel, are you alright? You don't seem to have gotten much sleep, what with spending half your night in the forest," Ford said, pointedly refusing to make eye contact with me.
"I'll be fine." As she said that Mabel yawned, stretching her arms out.
You're being quiet. I thought.
Just letting you enjoy your little family bonding time.
Until when?
Until I get bored.
"Dip?"
I looked up, "yeah?"
"You zoned out for a minute there. It's creepy. Like someone pressed pause on your remote." Mabel said.
"Oh... Just thinking... I mean... Talking to ... Bill."
I had tried to avoid mentioning him during breakfast. It didn't seem a good idea to remind them that the murderous cold hearted demon who had tired to destroy the world was sitting at their breakfast table with me.
"The shack'll be opening soon. What'll we tell everyone?" Stan asked.
"I could hide out in the forest for a while if you..." I said.
"No. You are not going out of my sight ever again Dipper Pines!" Mabel said sternly, wrapping her arms around me. Crushing my lungs.
"Can't... Breathe..." I squeaked.
"We can't exactly announce to the public that the demon who turned everyone into a massive throne of human agony that he's back and living in Dipper." Ford mused. I was surprised he was helping me.
Why wouldn't he? It's me he hates, not you.
"Yeah. There's no telling what could happen. Knowing the idiots here they'd probably burn Dipper at the stake." Stan said.
"Guys? Can we change the subject?" I asked, shifting in my chair uncomfortably.
"But come on! We gotta tell Wendy and Soos!" Mabel cried.
I blinked. Great. More awkward conversations.
"Hm... I suppose they could be trusted. But they have to swear not to tell anyone." Ford said.
"Grunkle Ford... Do you trust me now?" I asked hesitantly.
He looked at me, "I want to protect Dipper. And that's all."
"Typical Sixer. Never lets things go." Bill said, rolling my eyes.
I blushed and looked down. I knew I must look crazy to them. With my attitude changing like pages in the wind.
Meh. There isn't really anything you can do about that.
No thanks to you.
It's equal share kid. I have as much right to be here as you do.
No you don't.
Remember who's keeping you alive?
Remember who's keeping you alive?
"What do you think? Should we tell them?" Mabel asked.
I bit my lip. Soos and Wendy were like family. Or, they were last year. But ...
"They can't take it any worse than you guys, right?" I asked weakly, smiling.
And then, as if on cue. The Gift Shop door opened with a ring.
"Hey! Mr Pines! We're here!" I heard Soos.
"And I'm on time today so no more demerits please!" Wendy called.
Mabel jumped up, "perfect timing! And then ran out of the kitchen.
I gulped and looked at my Grunkles. They were looking as uncomfortable as I felt.
"Guys! You are never gonna believe what's happened!" We heard Mabel.
Showtime pine tree." Bill laughed.
I stood up and peeked out from behind the door. Wendy, Soos and Mabel were in the hall. Mabel was smiling hugely, like I remembered her, and Wendy and Soos were looking very confused.
"Mabel? What's going on?" Wendy asked.
"Yeah hambone? And where are Mr Pines and Mr Pines?" Soos asked.
"Well, maybe it's best if I show you." Mabel turned and spotted me, "hey! Don't be shy! Come on out!" She called. I ducked back into the kitchen.
"Who was that?" Wendy asked.
"You'll see!" Next thing I knew Mabel had dragged me into the hall. I looked up and found myself staring them full in the face.
The first thing Soos did was grab a broom leaning against the wall and hold it up, "aaah! Die! Die you evil blond Shapeshifter!"
"Soos stop! It's him! It's really him!" Mabel yelled. Holding up her hands. I blushed and put my hands behind my back.
"Wait... Is that you...?" Wendy asked. She hadn't changed at all, except perhaps her hair was a bit longer. And her corduroy shirt was red now, instead of green. Soos had shaved off his small attempts of a moustache, and had maybe lost a few pounds.
"H-hey guys... Long time no see?" I said, rubbing the back of my head nervously.
"Dude... You're alive!" And then I was swept up into a bone crushing hug.
"You're ... Worse than... Mabel..." I managed to get out, trying not to die.
And here I thought the werewolves were a problem. Your friends have a better chance of killing us.
"S-sorry Dude." Soos put me down and began crying.
"...Dipper...?" Wendy asked. Like she had seen a ghost. Well...
"Hey Wendy." I said, stuffing my hands into my pants pockets.
"You're blond ..." She said.
I nodded, "that's what Mabel said too."
And then Wendy Corduroy did something I had never seen before. And had never expected to ever see. She sniffed, and tears began to well up, and she hugged me tight, bawling at full volume.
