The doors to the throne room burst open, Alex running in with Daniel not far behind him. "We found her!"
I gasped as I jolted, rushing behind him as he brought me out the doors. I ran to the front of the throne room, a small girl, no more than six, stood in front of me. Her white hair was matted and tangled, tangled in curls falling down her back. She had a small cut on her forearm bleeding slowly, clear signs of malnutrition obvious. I made my way to her bent figure, pressing my hand over it until it healed and the blood receded.
She chose them to look up to me, my breath hitching as I took in her eyes. A storm rolled through her irises, the same color of clouds on a thunderous morning. Her lips were full, even at this age. A arrow found its rightful place on the inside of her wrist, letting me know we had in fact, found the right girl.
"What's your name?" I asked slowly, her eyes darting around her. She took everything in, her fingers shaking as she pushed her hair from her face.
"Lena, I, I don't know my last name." I smiled as I touched her forehead, my brain rummaging through her memories.
But I found nothing.
Everything was blank, no memories, nothing that told me who she was or where she was from. I pulled away and looked at her eyes, searching through me like she could read my very soul.
'I can.'
I jolted as her words entered my brain, slithering through my ears an doubt before I could notice. She stared back at me with those big grey eyes of hers, the sound of the doors opening.
I looked up to find my son walking through, his dark brown hair bobbing with every step he took. "Mommy, who's this?"
Lena's breath hitched, her eyes glazing over as she took in my son. I knew that look, that was the look I had every time I saw my mate; Xander.
"No one Tyler, go to training." He nodded curtly, his eyes never taking themselves off of Alena until he reached the door. I looked back to Lena, her eyes trained on the door he left. "He's your mate, and you're going to be his Protector."
She looked at me confused, my eyebrows furrowing as I watched her. "What, he's my what?"
"Mate, the one you love so incredibly much it drives you wild. You'll understand once you turn fifteen, or when you shift-"
"I've already shifted." I shut my mouth, my eyes wide as I took her in. Everything she said was true, no trace of a lie anywhere on her face.
"How can that be?" She shrugged, her finger tracing over the arrow on her wrist.
"I woke up a few weeks ago in the forest, in my wolf. I've been shifting into her for a while now." I nodded, wringing my hands together.
"You're going to be a Protector sweetie, and will be protecting the shifter world. You will be training, away from my son. When it's time, you will completely meet him. Until then, lets go and eat you dinner."
That's how the Protectors came about, how my son found his mate, and how the shifter world found its new Queen.
