Chapter 13: Split

I stood on guard. Waiting for Beyond to come and attack me any moment. The mere thought of him being in this room sent unwanted shivers to run down my spine.

"(F/n)-chan, are you okay?" 

"Y-yeah. Let's get on with the investigation." 

Though cautious and weary, the investigation was finished. You were met with a lot of decoys until L solved them down to one. 

A murder done by a prodigy. For a purpose. 

The first step to the problem was solved. The thing is, L doesn't know its purpose. But he expects and calculates that this will not be the last.

And so for the first time in a few years, murder done by a real serial killer was announced. Mass murder done by hands, coordinated with legs. This one is a type of murder where the killer itself visits the crime scene before it becomes one.

Yet somehow, I know and I'm sure that Beyond Birthday is still in this room.

"Kira! Let me out!"

"Shut up, Light. You know I can't. The game's going pretty far, I won't let you ruin it. Soon, the people will know me as Kira, defender of justice!"

"T-this wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't what I had in mind when I said that I'll stand up against evil."

"What do you know? You're only a perfect little mask for mother and father. You're the one who wasn't supposed to exist!"

"The point is, what you're doing is not justice! Answer me when I ask you this, If the only way to eliminate evil is to use evil means yourself, would you do it or turn a blind eye on it?"

Either way, evil remains.

"Justice is whatever my judgment is!"

Your POV

I frantically ran to my room and quickly opened my browser. I sat still, nervously playing with the hem of my shirt.

I quickly searched what I had to search for.

A quick analysis of Dissociative Identity Disorder

This condition can be pretty confusing. It has a lot of faults and twists. However, one thing I could tell is that there is a host (the original personality) and the split/s, which are the other known personalities that a host has.

Dissociative Identity Disorder, previously called as "Multiple Personality Disorder" can be caused by trauma in the early childhood, or simply a traumatic event, leading to a fault in the mentality of a person.

(There is an on-going battle between psychologists whether this disorder is a fact or fiction.)

   It is believed that amnesia, the key to the formation of the separate personalities, occurs as a psychological barrier to seal off unbearably painful experiences from consciousness. The disorder often occurs in childhood but may not be recognized until much later.   

It hit me like a ton of bricks. It made sense that the pit of my stomach churned as we were inside that building as if knowing there is danger nearby. It made sense that I can't see Beyond, whereas he told me that we'll soon meet beside bloodshed, and I know that he keeps his word. It made sense.

Beyond Birthday and Ryuzaki are in the same body. But when the time comes, that Beyond would be caught, What will be convicted? The body, or the mind?

Is this the same for Light? If so, is he Light, or is he Kira?

In the end, it might not even matter. Because there is that highly made possibility whereas amnesia created a barrier of two personalities from the same person. Who knows, maybe L has these violent tendencies, or if Light has this psychopathic mind hidden under layers of what seems to be 'perfection'.

Who knows, maybe Beyond and Kira didn't even exist in the first place. They might just be a split, or a shadow from their realities.

What bitter mockery is this?
