Worse than death (Edward's POV)

The whole family's in danger, and it's all because of me! I shouldn't have left Bella, back then.

it's been 70 years Edward... The voice in my head mutters.

Yes, 70 years of regret!

In the span of 70 years, I haven't really changed. I only changed in terms of appearance, dark, purplish shadows tattooed itself under my eyes, due to thirst. I haven't been hunting for months now.

Son, stay focused in life...

that's what Carlisle always said.

But I know, that I'll never live the way I did back then.

I still remember her sweet smile, her flawless features, her clumsy acts, her sweet voice, her scent.

I inhaled a mouthful of, fresh air. And started to focus.

The pounding in my head lessened. I asked myself few questions.

Is she happy at this right moment?

Is she seeing my regrets?

Does she still love me?

these were some of the questions that, popped out, questions without clear answers.

Is she happy?

Of course she is, to live with such innocence, such kindness. I'm sure, heaven welcomed her the moment she passed.

Does she see my regret?

I hope she does. I hope she'll understand the fact that, I'd rather leave her to live, than stay, which will only risk her precious life.

Does she love me?

No! I'm sure she hates my guts. Even I who left her, hate myself.

This is one of the decisions in life, that I get to say, I really messed up, that I wasted a lifetime pleasure, that I, Edward Anthony Masen Cullen killed the only thing that kept me living.

A sudden thud made me go back to realization.

Screams were heard, I instinctively ran outside.

Emmett, our strongest fighter, is in the ground, pain and torture visible in the marks, his abductors left.

Carlisle's thoughts frightened me.

Are we really doomed?
