Chapter 103

Harry's POV

It's been over an hour since Catherine went through those damned double doors, to discuss my Karleigh. Pretty soon, I'll have to head over to the cancer treatment wing of the hospital, but I'm awaiting Gemma's arrival because she text me letting me know she was stopping by.

Absentmindedly picking at the dead skin around my fingernails, I pay no attention to the newest arrival in the hospital waiting room. The sound of heels clicking against the tile floors, gets my attention as a pair of black boots stop right in front of my chair.

Looking up from my hunched position, my eyes meet with a pair fairly similar to mine.

"Gemma." I breathe out a sigh of relief.

She crosses her arms across her chest. "No, I'm Santa Clause. Well of course it's Gemma, who else would it be?" My older sister says with an attitude.

I glare at her and she huffs, taking the seat directly beside me.

"How is she?" Gemma asks hesitantly.

I tilt my head to the side so I can look into her eyes. "She's not doing so well Gemma."

Gemma sighs and leans her head over so she can rest it on my shoulder. One of her arms snakes around my waist but I pay no mind to it.

"How are you holding up, Harry?" She whispers softly.

"I love her too much for this shit, Gem." I tell her truthfully. "And Dr. Pope is keeping me in the dark right now, because I'm not her next of fucking kin." Bitterness fills my tone.

As if the universe is mocking me, the double doors that lead to the hallway of the hospital, swing open. My head darts up just as Catherine pads out, alone. Her eyes are red and her blonde hair is draped in her face.

She moves towards me and I stare at her questioningly.

Gemma's eyes move between Catherine and I, obviously wondering who she is. Part of me thinks to introduce her, but my curiosity of Karleigh's condition overwhelms my manners.

"What's going on?" I blurt.

Catherine closes her eyes, massaging the bridge of her nose.

"It's all very complicated, and I can't stay here tonight. I'm leaving, I've just called a cab to pick me up." She tells me in a tired voice. I glare at her rudely, wanting to know what the hell 'all very complicated' means exactly.

I wait for Catherine to say anything else, but she doesn't. Gemma leans closer to her and outstretched her arm. "I'm Gemma, Harry's older sister."

Catherine for the first time, seems to notice Gemma and gives her a soft smile.

"Did you know my Karleigh?" She asks my sister.

Gemma nods her head with a sad smile, confirming Catherine's question. The way Catherine said 'my Karleigh' really aggravates me, because she isn't her Karleigh, she's mine.

Catherine leans down to give me a hug, and I awkwardly hug her from my seated position. "I'll see you soon Harry." She sighs as she unwraps her arms from around me to leave. Catherine says nothing else to Gemma, as she turns and walks away, leaving Gemma and I alone.

Silence lingers between the two of us, and I look down at the time on my watch.

"I've got an appointment, with Dr. Martin in about fifteen minutes, you wanna walk with me?" I offer and she nods, rising to her feet alongside me.
