Chapter 111

Harry's POV

She's too quiet.

Than again, I can't say I'm putting in a significant amount of effort into conversation either, but it's driving me insane having her so close but not hearing her voice.

Waves of anger are flushing through me, but I'm trying to get a grip on my emotions. I briefly glance over at Karleigh, her body is angled away from me, and she's gazing quietly out the window at the fast moving scenery. My lips part as I prepare to say something to her, but my phone starts to ring.

An annoyed sign is released from my mouth and Karleigh briefly looks over at me. I grab my cell phone and groan when I see my Mom's caller ID showing on my screen.

"Hi mom." I answer.

"Harry, how is everything honey?" Her chirpy voice randomly asks me.

"Everything's fine mom. What's up?" I ask her, knowing she has a reason for calling. She never randomly calls to chat, she's too much of a busy-body.

"I'm cooking a big dinner, Robin suggested I call to invite you." The chirpy-ness of her tone is starting to fade as she pauses. "I never see you anymore." She quietly adds, an odd type of sadness hidden beneath the surface of her voice.

Guilt fills within me and I know she's right, I haven't seen her in a while. Lately I've been keeping to myself, only going out for necessities or to attend doctor appointments.

My eyes flicker over to Karleigh, who's trying not to stare at me but I know she's listening, she's always been the nosy type.

"What time is dinner?" I sigh.

"5:30pm" The usual cheerfulness of her voice is starting to return.

"I've got to drop Karleigh off at home, then I'll be over." Karleigh's looking directly at me now, but I'm avoiding her eyes and staring straight ahead at the road.

Mom's voice drops to a whisper as if she's afraid Karleigh will hear. "She's with you?"

"Yes, Mom."

Her voice returns to it's usual volume. "Bring her too!"

"Mom," I whine. "No, she doesn't want to come."

"Is that Anne?" Karleigh urgently whispers to me from the passenger seat. I look over at her and nod. "Let me talk to her."

My heart starts to race at her request, but I nod. "Mom, Karleigh would like to speak to you."

"Wonderful!" Mom squeals, as I hand the phone to Karleigh.

Karleigh brings the phone to her ear and I dart my gaze back and forth between her and the road. "Uh-huh..." Karleigh says into the speaker, nodding intently as she listens to whatever my mom could be saying. Honestly, this is just as nerve wracking as the first time she met my mom.

A slow smile spreads across Karleigh face, and I become more worried. "I'd love to." She says, beaming. "Alright, thanks Anne."

Karleigh hangs up and hands me my phone. "Let's go to dinner." She says with a nonchalant smile that warms my heart.

"I love your Mom." Karleigh adds. "You know she stopped by my Aunt's house to visit me after I got out of the hospital."

My head snaps over to look at her. "She did?" I'm shocked. Karleigh nods in confirmation.

"Yeah, she's great. You shouldn't take her for granted." Karleigh adds and I almost sarcastically laugh. She of all people shouldn't be one to tell me how to manage a relationship with my Mom. She doesn't remember, but her and her mother weren't on the best terms prior to her accident either.
