Chapter 35.

"Jason!"

I screamed at the top of my lungs, my heart starting to pound so hard I thought that it would come out of my chest.

I backed away from the window, running out of my bedroom and down the hall to Jason's, swinging his door open. I expected him to be in his room, but he wasn't.

"Jason!" I yelled again, awaiting a response but hearing absolutely nothing.

I ran downstairs and through the kitchen, going into the living room searching for him. I scanned the room quickly, still not finding him.

I couldn't believe this. He left me here alone.

I started to panic as I took a glimpse at the front door, terrified that Alex would come through any minute. I was completely defenseless when it came to him. Especially since Jason wasn't around. I shook away those thoughts and quickly tried to think of what Jason would want me to do. And that was to hide.

I heard something at the back door and turned around to face it before quickly bolting back upstairs. I tried to quietly search for a place to hide, but couldn't do so with fear running throughout my body. I listened carefully to what I thought was the sound of the door creaking open and felt chills run down my spine. He was in the house. I heard a loud slam and jumped, immediately running down the hall and to the closet next to the bathroom. There was no other place to hide, and under my bed or Jason's was not really a solution at all. People always got caught like that.

I opened the door to the closet and crept inside silently, ducking underneath the shelf that sat about 2 1/2 feet off of the floor. I shut the door slowly, trying not to create the clicking sound of the door shutting.

I listened quietly, sweating already from being compacted in the small space. I heard another loud bang come from downstairs and jumped again, pulling my knees to my chest as I heard heavy footsteps begin to come up the stairs.

My heart starting beating faster and I listened as I heard Jason's door creak open, signaling that they were at the end of the hallway. I covered my mouth with both of my hands as I heard their footsteps move closer, opening my door next which was not too far away from the closet.

"Parker,"

I stiffened. The voice was muffled through the door, not letting me clearly hear them as they whispered my name. But they knew I was hiding up here. They were looking for me.

My palms started growing sweaty as I heard them begin to walk towards the bathroom. My vision became blurred, but I didn't want to cry. I didn't want to show Alex that I was scared of him, it would just give him the satisfaction he wanted. I stopped flooding myself with these thoughts when I noticed that their footsteps were now moving in the opposite direction.

I removed my hands away from my mouth, them trembling from fear and quietly let out the breath the I was holding for so long. I didn't want to get out at all until I knew for sure that they were gone. I adjusted myself carefully into a different position, my legs tucked underneath me as I bent forward to check in between the crevice of the door. I couldn't see anything but the light shining through.

I lifted up my arm and removed my hair that stuck to my forehead, trying to get my leg out from underneath me without causing any noise, which was difficult in this tiny space. I started to untuck my leg, leaning against the back of the closet for support when I accidentally hit my head off of the shelf, making the cleaning supplied fall.

I stopped moving automatically, terrified now for my life knowing that I just gave away my hiding spot. I heard the heavy footsteps begin again, this time moving a lot quicker than before. I began to panic silently, shoving my face into my arms to try and silent my heavy breathing. The footsteps grew louder, letting me know that they were much closer. I looked up quickly, needing something to defend myself with but what was I supposed to find in a closet?
