"What? How?"
Ethan laughed. "Julie even if you don't date much, you have to know how!"
Kara blushed but pulled Ethan's hand into her lap and looked Julie directly in the eye. She was happy about this.
Julie swallowed down all other words and thoughts going through her head. She watched as Ethan looked at Kara, his eyes softening. She had seen him 'in love' before, but he looked at Kara as if she were his dream come true. Maybe she was.
"So what are you going to do?"
"We're getting married!" Kara said with a big smile. She held out her hand, and Julie saw a big sparkly diamond. How had she not noticed that before? Of course her long–lost friend who she thought was kidnapped and being experimented on by A.R.S.E. may have distracted her. "I'm technically not old enough without my parents' permission, but it will be a cold day in hell before I ask them after what they did to me all these years. Who cares if my fake persona is a couple months older?" Kara giggled like this was all a big joke. She looked at Ethan, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Julie hesitated not sure what to say. Here she was trying to push off getting married to anyone, and Kara was leaping into it. Should she try to stop her, try to talk her out of it? Was that really her place?
She studied Ethan. She had known him since they were babies. He was a good guy. Even if this didn't work out, he wouldn't abandon Kara and their baby. She swallowed her words. These were her friends, and they needed her right now, even if she thought all of this was moving way too fast. Kara was pregnant now—it couldn't be slowed down.
"Yeah, I can't blame you for not wanting to ask them."
Kara beamed at her. "And Julie, I want you to be my maid of honor—my only bridesmaid."
Julie looked back and forth at them, both smiling at her. She couldn't bring herself to smile. Her gaze rested on Ethan. "Are you sure?"
He nodded. "I have never been surer of anything."
Julie crossed her arms. She knew Ethan. He hopped from girl to girl, always looking for someone better. Hell, he had tried to date her.
He snorted. "I can tell what you're thinking. And I know. But I know this is right."
Julie raised an eyebrow. She'd heard him gush in the past about girls, only to turn around and dump them a week later. Would he do that with a pregnant Kara out in the real world for the first time?
She felt sick. She loved Ethan, but she wasn't blind to the fact that he played around with girls. He broke hearts, not the other way around. Had Kara really touched his heart for real?
"This isn't something you can back out of. Not that you can now, I guess." Not with a baby coming.
Ethan and Kara would always be tied together, even if they hated each other at some point. Everyone seemed to forget this part in the excitement of having a child. This wasn't something they could just walk away from without a lot of baggage cropping up.
"No. She is what I was always looking for. I can't explain it, but she is." He looked down. "I have this feeling with her. As soon as I saw her picture, I felt compelled to talk to her. Then when I did, I found out how sweet she is, how kind...And then she needed help." He smiled at Kara. "We've been living together for a few months now. I've never been this close to anyone before. I can share things with her that I didn't even share with Jamie."
Julie suppressed a frown, trying to keep her face neutral. But her heart sped up.
This feeling he had—could it be some kind of residual Fey glamour? Kara didn't have any powers anyone knew of, but she was still Fey, still graceful, beautiful, and alluring. That ethereal beauty was part of a Fey's weapon. Ethan's love might wear off as that spell wore off over time.
