Chapter 26

Mel

1994

Slash and I took our seats.
"Oh look there's Axl," Slash said with a cold tone. Axl and Slash weren't on talking terms, the 2 hadn't spoken for a while.
"Just ignore him," I said. The awards started and I saw Dave and Krist get up, I waved at Krist and he waved back.
"Drinks after?" He mouthed. I gave him a thumbs up and he continued to walk to the stage.
"As you know we lost a friend, a band mate and a brother," Krist said. I teased up and Slash held my hand.
"We will take a moment to remember him," Dave said. On the screen many photos showed back up on the screen of Kurt with friends and family. There was one of me, Dave, Krist and Kurt on the first tour. Dave and I were looking at each other, we looked so happy together.
"I am going outside," I said.
"Do you want me to come?"he asked.
"No," I said and went to the balcony. I lit cigarette and looked out to the bright city, the lights never seemed to go out. Its called the city of Angels and I can see why.
"Mel," I heard Krist say.
"Yes," I said.
"Come home," he said.
"What. No," I said.
"It would be for the best," he said.
"I am happy here," I said.
"Just come stay for a week and see how you like it," he said.
"Fine," I said. I went back in and sat with Slash.
"You ok?" He asked.
"Yeah fine," I said. The award for best guitarist of the decade came and to no surprise Slash won. The crowd went wild and as soon as he got on stage photographers went crazy. He came back and sat back down. I kissed him.
"Congratulations," I said. I went to the bathroom and did a line of cocaine, I know it's terrible but sometimes it seems that's the only thing I've got going . I went back to Slash when I was done.
"Krist invited me to some drinks, do you wanna come?" I asked.
"Yeah sure but if Dave starts at you he's gonna get it," he said.
"Just don't start anything," I said. We arrived at the hotel room of Krist and Dave. Shelli was also staying with them.
"Hey," I said as I walked in.
"Ohh it's Blondie. And she bought her boyfriend!" Shelli said excitedly.
"Oh I've missed you," I said giving her a hug. We walked into the main part of the room and Dave and Krist were there. A few minutes later Courtney and a couple of her band members showed up, I have no idea why Krist invited her.
"Oh god! Melanie Cobain," she said when she saw me.
"Oh hey," I said.
"Jesus Christ! You sure ain't that Seattle girl anymore," she said.
"What's that meant to mean?" I asked.
"Look Honey, you look like an LA chick," and lighted a joint.
"Well thanks," I said awkwardly.
"I am gonna leave," Slash said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Coz I don't wanna be here," he said.
"Whatever," I said and he left. We all sat at the table on the balcony.
"Frances is getting so smart," Courtney said.
"I would like to see her sometime," I said.
"Ok good. You know where I live, come around on Friday we need to talk," She said.
"So I hear you're gonna come back to Seattle for a bit," Shelli said.
"Yeah. I am leaving in a week," I said.
"We leave for home in 3 days," she said. We chatted but I didn't speak to Dave.

Dave

I know Mandy wasn't coming back. She had a message passed on saying she is going back to Florida. At the awards I had seen Slash talking to some girl while Mel was outside. He seemed to be pretty friendly with her.
"Ohhhh you seem more fun," Courtney said to Mel.
"Hahah yeah," Mel said awkwardly. Mel got up and went to get some more champagne, I decided that I should go talk to her.
"Hey," I said.
"Oh hi," She said. I got nervous considering this was the first time I had spoken to her in months.
"Can I talk to you privately?" I Asked.
"Yeah sure," she said
"Are you ok?" I asked.
"Yes," she said.
"No like I am serious," I asked.
"Of course not. Our baby died, my brother also did, we broke up after 4 years oh and I have a cocaine addiction," she said.
"Cocaine!" I said.
"Yes. I've become Courtney. We even fucking look the same," she said.
"Mel," I softly said.
"I know," she said crying.
"You need help," I said. She said nothing and left.
"Thanks guys," I heard her say to the others on the balcony.
