Chapter 29

1995

Mel

Shelli and I spent all afternoon shopping.
"Oh, it's so good to have you back."

"I really do love it here."

"Move back down,"

"I can't.  Slash has everything set up in LA."

"Ugh," Shelli groaned. We went to get some coffee then went to my mum's house. I hadn't seen my mum in probably a year, we did call each other up a bit though. 

"Mel," she screamed when she opened the door. 

"Oh I have missed you my Melanie," she said. Shelli and I went inside to chat with my mum. I was never really close with mum but we still get on. 

"So when's the wedding?" she asked

"In 2 months now."

"Don't get angry but do you really think this marriage will last?" I had no answer.

"What about Dave?"She asked.

"What do you mean," I asked.

"Well, you were going to marry him. Are you sure Slash wants to settle down and get married?"

 I really had to think about it. Shelli and I left a few hours later and I had arranged to have dinner with mum on my second last night here. Shelli and I picked up some alcohol on the way home. When we got home Krist and Dave were watching tv.

"Hey Shel," Krist called out.

"Hello, darling." Shelli went over and kissed Krist on the cheek.

"I'll start dinner. It's your favourite Krist," I said.

"Mac and cheese!"

"Yep." 

"Oh I haven't had mac and cheese as good as yours in forever," he said. I went into the kitchen and started making dinner.

"Haven't seen Krist that excited for food in a while," Dave said.

"It's funny to see him get so excited over such small things," I said.

"Your mum called me this afternoon while you were shopping."

"Oh shit. What did she say?"

"Look she wanted me to talk to you about the wedding." Just hearing those words made me nervous about what was to come next.

"What's there to talk about?"

"Are you sure you want to get married. Do you think Slash will be a good husband to you?"

"Look I am really not sure, I honestly have no idea. I am just trying to live in the moment."

"A moment like getting married is a big commitment." 

"Talk about this outside," I said and we went outside. We sat on the balcony and I lit a cigarette.

"I see you still have your nervous habit," Dave said.

"Been trying to kick it. Look you need you to answer me honestly. Have you heard of a girl named Perla? Slash mentioned her when he was drunk."

I really didn't want to tell Mel about how Pat had seen Slash and that girl but I knew it was the right thing to do.

"Ok. Pat saw Slash and some girl making out in a club."

"Oh Jesus. Oh fuck.I need to get to LA," she said

"Slow down. Call him first," I said. Mel went into the kitchen to the phone and shut the door. An hour later Mel came out.

"I don't believe a word he's saying. I am taking a plane straight to LA."

"I'll come with you."

"Ok." I went and told Shelli and Krist about what was happening. By 11:30 we were on a plane to LA, we landed at 2:00 am and by 2:30 we were on the doorstep of Slash and Mel's house. Mel put her hand in a flower pot next to the door and pulled out a key. She opened the door and walked in, I heard the sound of moaning and knew straight away what was going on. Mel ran up the stairs and burst open a door.

"Shit," I heard a female voice yell.

"What is this?!" Mel yelled.

"Babe I love you," Slash said.

"It's over and I am getting my stuff," Mel said.  I called a cab to put all Mel's stuff in. She didn't say a word. By 5:00 am we had put all her belongings into a taxi. She went inside to get her final bag and I heard Slash talking to her.
"You're really not thinkng right," he said.
"Look it's over. You have been cheating on me even though we were suppose to be getting married!"
"Well so did you. You cheated on Dave."
"I kissed someone once. You have fucked this girl for months and even in our bed! There's a big difference." Mel slammed the door and we headed back to the airport.
