It had been around 5 years now, since Burgundy left to go to another region. Fletcher had voluntarily risen rather slowly through the ranks of the CPF and was now a Captain, but he couldn't get over the loneliness he felt without Burgundy, even with his Pokémon partners by his side.
Today was no different. Fletcher had a couple days of vacation time left, and since summer was nearly over, he decided to spend one of them in the plaza, where there were a few stalls selling trinkets as well as ice cream and other sweet treats. Fletcher sat on the edge of the fountain and sighed, looking around at the tourists and their Pokémon, and that was when a particular Pokémon caught his eye.
It was a Vulpix, but at the same time Fletcher was sure it wasn't, as it was snowy white with an almost purple tinge to its fur and cloud-like tails. The strange white-purple Vulpix ran up to an ice cream vender, followed by, presumably, its trainer, a girl who seemed to be in her mid 20s. She was wearing rather short black shorts, and a black-and-white striped v-neck t-shirt, and her skin was tanned.
"Cloud! I told you, ice cream isn't good for you!" The girl was scolding her Vulpix, but Fletcher focused on the sound of her voice. She was dressed like a tourist, but had a distinctly Unovan accent. After apologising to the guy at the stall, she turned, and that was when Fletcher stood up, his eyes wide.
"B-Burgundy!?" The girl stopped, looking directly at Fletcher, the hot pink eyes behind red, thick-rimmed glasses a dead giveaway. Burgundy smiled, getting over the slight shock of seeing Fletcher.
"Hey, stranger." The Vulpix, Cloud, ran in between the two, yipping, as if trying to defend its trainer. "Relax Cloud, he's a friend." Burgundy chuckled, picking Cloud up and holding it in her arms.
"I, uh...you look..."
"Different? Yeah, I know. That's what happens when you're in the Alolan sun for five years."
"You went to Alola?"
"Yep! And that's where I got this beauty." Burgundy gently patted Cloud's head. "She's an Alolan Vulpix, and a shiny-coloured one at that."
"That's amazing..."
"So, I'm guessing you're wondering why I left so suddenly."
"Well, yeah...it hurt..." Fletcher sat back on the edge of the fountain and Burgundy sat next to him.
"I'm sorry...I was unstable, I still am...but at least now I'm not afraid of my own feelings..."
"Why would you be afraid?"
"Because I was alone for thirteen years...I'd forgotten how to interact with other humans...I didn't want to care for someone and lose them...not again..."
"You won't lose me..." Fletcher carefully put his arm around Burgundy and she sighed.
"I know that...now..."
"So...about us..." Burgundy looked at him and giggled.
"If you're trying to ask me to be your girlfriend, then the answer is yes." She leant up and kissed his cheek, giggling again as she watched his face heat up.
